In the role of Principal Software Engineer for Azure Compute Node Services, you will help design, develop, and operate the compute platform that powers virtual machines, containers, and bare metal servers. Our team is focused on evolving the Azure host, integrating hardware acceleration, and implementing strategies to enhance performance, reliability, and efficiency. You will work closely with engineers across Azure to deliver scalable features that support diverse workloads with high availability.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 6+ years of experience in technical design.
- 6+ years of experience in debugging.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years experience in Linux/Windows Operating System (OS) internals, and Kernel development.
- 5+ years proficiency with RUST.
- 5+ years experience in large-scale system architecture, design, development, testing and release, including but not limited to Cloud Infrastructure, system level application design and development, performance tuning, telemetry design and analysis.
- 5+ years of demonstrated analytical skills with systematic and structured approaches to software design.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities
- Lead technically, raise standards and maintain a results-driven culture.
- Leads identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service or platform.
- Optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness and Return on Investment (ROI).
- Collaborate within Azure to develop platforms for managing and monitoring at scale.
- Develop engineers at all levels through knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
- Serve as a role model for an open, honest, and inclusive approach to problem solving.
- Acts as an Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and monitors other engineers across product lines, working on-call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime or interruptions.
- Seeks new knowledge and adapts to emerging trends, technical solutions and patterns to enhance the availability, reliability, efficiency and performance of products.
