Position Summary
A part-time position is available at Oregon State University, Southern Oregon Research and Extension Center in Central Point, OR. The areas related with this position include plant health, plant disease diagnosis and management.
The incumbent will provide technical research support for the Plant Pathology research and extension program at the Southern Oregon Research & Extension Center in Central Point, OR. Duties will include assisting research assistants, technicians, graduate students, and principal investigator (PI) in disease samples collection, processing, laboratory analysis, field data collection and research plot maintenance.

Position Duties
Duties include the technical assistance in a plant pathology program. It includes, but are not limited to media preparation for culturing bacterial and fungal pathogens of tree fruits and wine grapes, processing field samples for pathogen isolation, microbial culture collection management, data entry, laboratory cleanliness and maintenance of lab equipment; data collections from field research plots, data entry and management. The applicant will be required to use and operate various laboratory equipment such as an autoclave, pH meter, laminar flow hood, microscopes etc. The applicant will perform routine to complex technical or specialized tasks in support of research.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • High School Graduate with strong interest in biological research
  • Competence in Microsoft Office programs including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to work as part of a team and be able to handle independent project tasks
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Strong preference for current undergraduate student at the time of application submission
  • Experience working independently in laboratory and field settings
  • Working knowledge in ecology, plant science and/or environmental science
  • Experience working in an agricultural setting
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position may require you to work outdoors in all types of weather for several hours with exposure to dust and pollen.
The position may require you to sit for several hours in lab setting.
Typically, this position will work variable hours M-F. Occasionally you may be required to work outside of the normal work week and hours.
Anticipated hours per week: 24 hours during academic terms.
The position term is subject to extension based on research needs and work performance
