Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Support Associate for Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (CABM) within the Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS).

The primary purpose of the Research Support Associate is to assist the federally funded research team studying protein evolution and the origins of metabolism. Under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Support Associate will perform various research and technical operations as part of a collaborative project aimed at understanding the evolution of the protein nanomachines that mediate electron transfer, including the origin of catalysis, the evolution of protein structures in microbial ancestors, and the co-evolution of proteins and the geosphere through geologic time.

The Research Support Associate will contribute to the investigation of protein design and protein language models using advanced computational approaches. This position will also be responsible for lab management, supporting day-to-day activities and participating in collaborative meetings, as well as assisting in the development of protocols, and maintaining accurate records of designs, analyses, and results.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigator performs various research/technical operations relative to the investigatory activities of the laboratory.
  • Writes simulation software in Python and C++ for protein structure simulations and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven prediction tools.
  • Generates and analyzes protein sequence/structure data using in-house scripts, Matlab and bioPython tools.
  • Supports the day-to-day activities and operations of the laboratory. Collaborates with the Co-Principal Investigator to evaluate and improve lab management practices.
  • Assists with developing and updating laboratory research protocols and is responsible for maintaining accurate records of designs, analyses, and results.
  • Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers’ regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, biophysics, biochemistry or related field required.
  • Proficiency in programming languages and packages such as Python, C++ , R, BioPython required.
  • Experience using computational approaches such as combinatorial sampling, molecular dynamics, and quantum computing.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to generate and analyze protein or molecular structural models.
  • Knowledge base of multivariable and vector calculus, as well as geometric algebra.
  • Familiarity with machine learning and algorithms.
  • Knowledge and proficiency with protein Large Language Models (pLLMs).
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate documentation and contribute to a collaborative research environment.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with protein simulations, modeling and design software packages such as MOE, AlphaFold, AMBER, ESM, ChimeraX, pyMol, VMD.
  • Ability to assist in the development and improvement of research protocols and methods.
