The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Immunology, is seeking a full-time technician to support newly funded research programs. The Wells lab investigates the role of host-intrinsic genetic factors that determine the development, maintenance and function of the immune system in barrier tissues, particularly the skin.

The applicant will support the function of the laboratory and assist scientists conducting experiments in cellular and molecular immunology, with direct supervision. The applicant should have some knowledge of flow cytometry and other basic immunological techniques. A significant task will include maintenance of the mouse colony, which includes breeding, weaning, PCR-based genotyping, and record keeping. The applicant should be very eager to learn new techniques and improve existing techniques.

Other required skills: Excellent organizational and planning skills, and attention to detail, are essential. Strong mathematical skills related to the biological sciences, including dilutions, ratios, concentrations, etc. Must keep detailed and accurate records. Excellent writing and verbal communication. Proven ability to work in a collaborative team and take guidance from supervisor. Experience with University of Pittsburgh systems and processes for purchasing and ordering is preferred.

Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree in Immunology, Biology or related field is required. Knowledge of mathematical and chemical principles. Must be highly organized and efficient with their time. Must maintain professional demeanor and work well with others. Must be able to prioritize daily duties.

Job Summary

Performs laboratory testing and some analysis on multiple types of specimen samples. Operates and properly sterilizes equipment and maintains inventory and assists with ordering.

Essential Functions

1. Perform supervised laboratory work and experiments, including guided analysis of murine and human cell culture experiments. These will involve cell isolation from organs, immunofluorescence staining, flow cytometry, cell sorting, cell culture, and other techniques, including cloning. Writes reports and summaries of findings with guidance from supervisor.

2. Oversee specimen inventories with guidance from supervisor.

3. Maintains lab and chemical inventories. Assists with ordering as needed. Maintain lab work areas.

4. Work with supervisor to prepare data for presentation to the group and for publication.

5. Assist lab members in basic immunological procedures.
