We are building Day 1 products to route millions of freight on a real-time basis. We are building complex software solutions that work across our vendors, warehouses and carriers to optimize both time & cost of getting the packages delivered. Our services handle thousands of requests per second, make business decisions impacting billions of dollars a year, integrate with a network of small and large carriers, owner operators and drivers worldwide, manage business rules for millions of unique products, and improve ordering and delivery experience for millions of online shoppers. In this role, as a leader for Amazon Routing technology, you will manage a team of very talented Software Engineers who are working on defining the vision for our new products and then executing to it to deliver exciting initiatives. You will regularly interact with executive leadership and work with products as well as other tech teams as you design and deliver state of the art technologies to evolve our freight marketplace. product. You’ll work in a fast paced environment and will be required to lead not only at the strategic level, but also tactically day-to-day by diving deeply into business and technical domains. As a multi-discipline leader, the buck will stop with you - you will work alongside engineering (dev and test) organization.
To accomplish this, you will be expected to have an established background in technology, excellent project and people management skills, great communication skills, and a motivation to achieve results in a fast paced environment. You should be somebody who enjoys working on complex system software, is customer-centric, and feels strongly about building good software as well as making that software achieve its operational goals. Experience with building and operating web-based applications and/or web services-based applications, especially at massive scale, will be very applicable and helpful. Internal stakeholders will include:
Operations teams requiring efficient freight movement solutions
Data science teams providing predictive models
Software engineering teams implementing your designs
Product managers aligning features with business goals
External stakeholders will involve:
Third-party logistics providers
Transportation partners (air, sea, rail, road)
Facility management program managers
A typical day might involve:
Morning stand-up with your development team
Reviewing algorithm performance metrics and adjusting parameters
Meeting with product to understand new constraints or requirements
Collaborating with research scientists on improving prediction accuracy
Presenting optimization results to senior leadership
Planning sprints and prioritizing feature development
Engaging with external partners to align on integration points
About the team
We're seeking a logistics optimization expert to revolutionize our middle mile operations across two critical dimensions: trailer path optimization and facility management. You'll architect solutions that determine cost-effective transportation routes and ensure optimal facility utilization. This involves balancing complex constraints including dock operations, yard management, gate throughput, and offsite yard coordination, while optimizing multi-modal freight movements. Your expertise will be crucial in developing algorithms that consider facility physical limitations, operating hours, equipment compatibility, and dynamic resource allocation. If you're passionate about solving multidimensional logistics challenges and can bridge transportation strategy with facility operations, we want your innovative mindset to transform our network efficiency.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
