As the compute foundation for Amazon Web Services (AWS), EC2 enables the global operation of thousands of applications across millions of servers worldwide. The EC2 Managed Region Builds org develops and operates the bootstrap infrastructure used to initiate and support every new AWS Region and Availability Zone. Our teams supports hundreds of AWS teams through the buildout of new compute capacity globally, as well as connectivity between Amazon’s data centers and services. This is a unique opportunity to build and innovate on the bootstrap infrastructure used to globally expand the world’s largest software ecosystem for our customers.

As a Software Development Manager (SDM) in AWS, you will be part of the larger technical leadership community that forms the backbone of the company, plays a critical role in the broad business planning, working closely with senior executives, influences our long-term technical and business strategy, helps us hire talented team of engineers and ultimately enables us to deliver innovative new solutions rapidly. You must have a strong operational experience, with a track record of operating highly available fault tolerant systems. The right candidate will want to measure everything and be very data driven. You will excel at using metrics, monitoring and alarming to measure and improve the operational processes and performance of their team. You must be comfortable operating in a fast moving, dynamic environment. You'll develop your team of highly motivated and talented builders who can collaborate with product managers, research managers, researchers, technical specialists, and principals across the company.

Key job responsibilities
In this position, you will

- Recruit, hire, mentor, and manage a team of software engineers.
- Foster career growth and a strong team culture.
- Interface with customers to understand requirements, communicate best practices, and communicate direction and progress.
- Own all operational metrics and support for your team’s software.
- Manage the agile development process and methodology to deliver technical requirements on time and with a high-degree of precision and quality.
- Coordinate with stakeholders in other groups, drive alignment across multiple teams on shared goals and initiatives.
- Make long term design/architectural decisions.
- Help develop long-term business and technology strategies.
- Drive improvements in software engineering practices.



A day in the life
After joining the team, the primary focus will be to
raise the bar to bring our bootstrap infrastructure and process up to production grade standards. This requires setting the vision for our products and services, and collaborating with existing engineering teams in our organization and across AWS to deliver highly visible goals. You will advocate for simplifying the integration experience for existing and new MRB partners. On a daily basis, activities will include managing projects, maintaining the team's high operational bar, and developing the careers of SDEs within our Managed Infrastructure space.


About the team
The Managed Region Builds (MRB) Org invents, evolves, and improves solutions to significantly complex problems with the potential to impact nearly all service organizations in AWS. The role requires a broad understanding of company systems and technologies and the ability to identify and solve gaps/opportunities within organizations, services, workflows, and tooling. High judgment and data driven business and technical acumen are critical to advance the organization’s primary directives: 1) Support and enable AWS expansion at scale by building the automation and infrastructure needed to deploy the AWS portfolio of services and dependencies, and 2) Enhance and maintain stability and scalability of our systems while supporting all AWS expansion programs globally.

Utility Computing (UC)
AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.
