System Development Engineer - Image Quality, RBKS Camera and Imaging
Amazon
Description
Are you interested in developing amazing products for end users, improving image quality through building cutting-edge testing automation
frameworks, and having your fingerprint on Amazon Ring cameras? If so, then please read on. As a System Development Engineer focused on testing automation, you would be working together with ISP tuning engineers, firmware developers, scientists, and various stakeholders on different sites.
When you are successful, the team will have robust, scalable automation tools that ensure Ring cameras capture every moment with stunning colors and great details, no matter whether it is day or night. In this work, you will understand how an image is created from sensor to full color image and how the Image Signal Processing pipeline transforms raw sensor data into beautiful imagery. You will design and develop automated testing systems and validation pipelines that assess image quality across diverse conditions, enabling faster iteration cycles and consistent quality delivery. This work requires strong software development skills, a solid understanding of ISP concepts and image quality metrics, and expertise in building test
automation frameworks. More than that, it requires the capability to innovate scalable solutions that integrate with existing tuning and validation workflows. It is essential to have camera system understanding and be able to learn from others. You should have genuine interest in using and continuously adopting the latest tools and technologies for automated testing, image quality assessment, and continuous integration. In this position, you will work with the latest and greatest technologies in the camera and embedded industry. Building the testing infrastructure for the future while supporting device delivery to the market is the key to success in the long run.
In Tampere, we have experts in most areas sitting in the very same office; you can just go and visit them and maybe sketch your idea on paper or whiteboard. The expert network at Amazon Ring is also there to ensure success in your work.

Key job responsibilities
As a System Development Engineer focused on testing automation and Image Quality validation, your output directly impacts millions of devices. You need to be able to design and develop automated testing systems that validate ISP performance and image quality across diverse lighting conditions and scenarios. This means you need to be familiar with camera control algorithms, and how different components in the imaging system interact with each other — so you can build meaningful, reliable tests around them.
There is always something that can be improved in image quality validation; your task is to figure out how to automate and scale it — this requires
skills to innovate solutions and communicate with others. A solution can be developing new automated validation pipelines, building CI-integrated test frameworks, creating tools for objective image quality assessment, or designing comprehensive regression test suites; it is essential that whatever you do it serves a purpose.
If you have experience with test automation frameworks, objective and subjective image quality metrics, scripting and software development (e.g.,
Python), statistical analysis, or hardware-in-the-loop testing, please do mention them in your resume.
You will work with hardware and prototype devices on Amazon Tampere premises. However we have our flexible culture where eventually results matter.
A day in the life
You are leading the testing automation and quality assurance effort for a new Ring camera product. You start by evaluating the existing validation
coverage against the initial hardware build, identifying gaps in automated testing for color accuracy, noise performance, and dynamic range across different lighting conditions.
Working closely with the ISP tuning team and firmware engineers, you develop a comprehensive test strategy that covers both objective image quality
metrics and subjective evaluation workflows. You design automated pipelines that systematically capture, analyze, and score image quality across
exposure control, white balance, color reproduction, and noise reduction — ensuring every tuning change is validated efficiently and consistently.
As the product progresses through development phases, you execute and refine validation campaigns to ensure image quality meets specifications. You
discover that edge cases in low-light scenarios aren't adequately covered by existing test protocols, so you design and implement new automated tests
that improve coverage for challenging lighting conditions. These tests become part of the standard validation suite, benefiting future products.
Throughout the day, you collaborate with imaging experts to root-cause quality issues flagged by your automated systems, present validation results
and test coverage metrics to stakeholders, and document your frameworks and methodologies so the team can leverage your work across the product
portfolio.
