As a Software Development Manager in the Security Operations team, you will own large-scale detection and response capabilities that protect every AWS customer. You will manage a team of security engineers and software development engineers responsible for automating threat detection enablement and security risk remediation across all AWS accounts. Our systems operate at massive scale, processing tens of millions of security findings monthly across tens of millions of accounts, and your team ensures this coverage is reliable, efficient, and continuously improving.
You will own the software architecture of your team's systems, making technology trade-offs that balance reliability, scalability, and development velocity. You are responsible for setting technical standards and driving engineering excellence across your team, ensuring your systems meet the high bar expected of security-critical infrastructure at AWS scale.
We are seeking a hands-on technical leader with an established background in delivering and operating large-scale distributed systems. You have strong technical skills, a deep understanding of software architecture, excellent project management skills, great communication skills, and motivation to achieve results for your customers. You are a leader who works backwards from customer needs, prioritizes systematically, communicates clearly, and fosters operational excellence and delivery within your team.
As a security leader, you will (a) lead by example, solving security challenges at massive scale through sound architectural decisions, (b) define and execute your team's roadmap working backwards from customer needs, (c) hire, build and manage a cross-functional engineering team developing engineers, and (d) foster strong team culture grounded in engineering excellence.
Key job responsibilities
You independently manage a team of up to 8 engineers. You assess engineer performance and develop senior engineers. You hire, develop, and promote engineers while raising the bar on talent.
You own the software architecture of your team's systems, making technology trade-offs and architectural decisions that have direct business impact on AWS security coverage. You set technical standards and drive engineering excellence across your team.
You define the roadmap for your team, working backwards from customer needs and partnering effectively with stakeholders. You deliver engineering solutions that ensure reliable, scalable security coverage across all AWS accounts.
You own the reliability and operational excellence of detection and response systems, driving down operational overhead through automation while maintaining consistent security coverage.
You contribute to organizational planning, aligning your team's goals with broader organizational strategy and resource planning.
You independently make short-term vs. long-term decisions. You define clear goals and objectives. You make crisp decisions about what projects move forward and in what priority order.
You delegate appropriately, assigning the right level of tasks based on the strength and development objectives of the individuals on your team.
You proactively identify risks and bring them to the attention of your manager, customers, and stakeholders with plans for mitigation before they become roadblocks. You know when to escalate.
You communicate ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing, to all types of audiences. You write narratives and strategic documentation, and build consensus across teams.
You work successfully with customers, leaders, and other engineering teams. You foster a constructive dialogue, harmonize discordant views, and lead the resolution of contentious issues.
You define metrics to measure team progress, customer experience, solution quality, and operational excellence. Your team has customer engagement mechanisms, adheres to SLAs, and effectively manages operations.
A day in the life
You review the operational health of large-scale detection and response systems, ensuring security coverage across all AWS accounts and addressing any service degradation rapidly.
You make architectural decisions and review technical designs, ensuring your systems meet the reliability and scalability bar required for security-critical infrastructure.
You drive automation improvements that reduce manual operational burden, freeing your engineers to focus on higher-value security work.
You align short-term operational requirements with long-term system investments, consistently measuring reliability and efficiency improvements.
You identify gaps by constantly challenging the norms. Every improvement to automation and reliability translates directly into better security outcomes for AWS customers.
You synchronize frequently with other specialized teams within the organization and across AWS Security to maintain a cohesive vision and maximize the impact of shared capabilities.
About the team
You will lead a team focused on large-scale detection and response automation across all AWS accounts. Your engineers have strong backgrounds in automation, distributed systems, AWS architecture, and incident response.
