Senior Sustainability Engineer , Data Center Engineering Sustainability
Amazon
Description
As part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge to reach net zero carbon by 2040, AWS is committed to reducing carbon emissions across our infrastructure, and we are seeking a Senior Sustainability Engineer to drive carbon reduction in the design of our Data Centers across our rapidly expanding APAC portfolio.
As a Senior Sustainability Engineer, you will work closely with the AWS Sustainability team, Global Design Engineering teams and Procurement teams to reduce carbon intensity in current and future AWS data centers. You will create mechanisms to identify opportunities for carbon reduction and track their success. Our standard data center solutions are adapted to the many geographies in which we operate and our building materials, structures and equipment are adapted to that local environment, the materials available and the construction techniques and competencies in that market. This provides the potential for specific carbon reduction opportunities on a building-by-building basis.
Key job responsibilities
• Understand the design and functionality of AWS data centers globally
• Create and/or modify existing mechanisms to track carbon throughout the project life-cycle
• Own the tracking of carbon for projects within your region -including working directly with our construction team and equipment suppliers to identify opportunities for carbon reduction (with our scale we drive the design of our equipment)
• Identify project/region specific opportunities to reduce carbon on specific builds
• Identify and pilot novel low-carbon materials and technologies
• Engage with material suppliers and industry groups to accelerate market availability of decarbonized products
• Propose and develop carbon reduction initiatives to be implemented globally across the AWS fleet
• Work with manufacturers to improve supply chain transparency and reduce product carbon intensity
• Support sustainability certifications for builds in your region as mandated by building permit requirements or AWS policies.
• Support our public policy teams in engaging with local authorities on sustainability regulatory consultations or issues
• Producing clear and concise documentation such as detailed design specifications, white papers, and reports
• Collaborate with design, construction, procurement, and sustainability teams to drive continuous improvement
• Initiate and drive to completion, sustainability initiatives for our future generations of data center designs.
• Be positive and always offer creative, out of the box solutions
A day in the life
At Amazon you will be responsible for working on multi-million-dollar designs that support our array of businesses and wide variety of customers. Great ideas are encouraged and supported.
Our engineers have hands-on practical sustainability experience across the project lifecycle — from concept design through construction, commissioning, and handover. You will be relied on as a subject matter expert in embodied carbon, material decarbonization, and sustainability compliance. At Amazon we highly support continued learning opportunities and focus on continued employee development.
As a Senior Sustainability Engineer at Amazon you will work with internal groups including Design Engineering, Construction, Equipment procurement, Contractors procurement, and AWS Sustainability — as well as external groups including material producers, equipment manufacturers, General Contractors, consultants, regulators, and industry consortia.
Amazon has a global presence and up to 25% travel will be expected as part of this role. Projects will be throughout the APAC region and a degree of international travel and support will be necessary.
About the team
The DCE Sustainability team's mission is to advance AWS's goals of net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and water positive by 2030. We identify the emerging engineering solutions needed to minimize the carbon emissions and water use of our data centers, then work to support their development, scaling, and incorporation into AWS data centers. We are the first point of contact for DCE's partner teams working on sustainability — and we are Senior Leadership's voice on sustainability within the organization.
The broader Data Center Design Engineering team at AWS consists of Architects, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Fire Protection, and Controls Engineers working to design the next generation of data centers. The team is committed to achieving world-class uptime for our customers and strives to develop a fleet of buildings emphasizing security, safety, and efficiency, while finding new ways to meet our growing demand.
