Description

The Mechanical Engineer designs automated packaging, sortation, and labeling platforms to enable faster and more efficient delivery to Amazon's customers.

The primary role of the Mechanical Engineer is to provide technical ownership and refinement of the packaging, sortation, and labeling automation systems. Working with the Electrical and Controls teams, the Mechanical Engineer will execute the design and manufacturing of Amazon's in-house packaging machinery and automation.

Utilizing RDPI's packaging machinery & automation platforms and modules, the Mechanical Engineer in conjunction with the Electrical and Controls Engineers will execute project / platform design evolution and execution enabling the manufacturing of Amazon's in-house packaging machinery and automation. Co-located with our electrical and controls engineers, packaging designers and materials scientist this role will lead the design and development to ensure that Amazon's packaging, sortation, and labeling automation is simple, effective and delivers lower total cost while enabling more sustainable packaging, streamlined supply chains and lower total cost of ownership.

A portion of this role will be dedicated to engineering process management and development. This includes becoming a subject matter expert in the team's PLM environment (Teamcenter), contributing to the definition and refinement of engineering processes — such as design release, change management, and BOM structures — and influencing process standards across the broader hardware engineering organization.

Key job responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineers to design and execute packaging machinery and automation projects
- Lead the mechanical design workstreams encompassing the core system evolution, structural member design including the modular frame, safety/guarding, and incorporation ancillary systems at the project / platform level while ensuring the technical, cost and timeline objectives are achieved
- Deliver engineering workstreams including drive system modeling, load and bearing calculations, static and dynamic torque simulations and analysis, 3D and 2D model design including the mechanical BOM generation
- Execute the detailed design evolution of modules and subsystems for material specifications, geographic requirements and continuous improvement goals aligned with MSP's platform and project level initiatives
- Partner with the Electrical Engineering, ensure project documentation is complete and scalable for electrical schematics, BOM, I/O's and subsystem programs
- Support the project team in the safety certification of the project / platform (CE, UL, CSA, TUV, etc..)
- Serve as a team subject matter expert for PLM processes within Teamcenter, contributing to the definition and continuous improvement of engineering workflows including design release, change management, and BOM management
- Partner with cross-functional teams to influence and standardize engineering processes across the broader organization, ensuring consistency and traceability from concept through production

About the team
Our Hardware Development Engineering team operates in a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment working alongside software engineers, controls engineers, data scientists, reliability engineers, and operations teams. We focus on the design, prototyping, and development of packaging automation systems — from early concept through production-ready integrated systems — ensuring they meet customer experience, safety, regulatory, and business requirements before deployment. Our work spans the entire product development lifecycle — from concept generation and design down-selection through continuous improvement of deployed systems across hundreds of fulfillment centers in North America and Europe. What sets our team apart is our hands-on approach to solving complex technical challenges. We design and build custom mechanisms, develop novel automation solutions, create robust mechanical and electromechanical systems, and work directly in lab environments and fulfillment centers to bring our designs from prototype to production at scale. Our contributions directly impact Amazon's sustainability goals, operational efficiency, and the customer experience for millions of packages shipped daily.
