Description
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
As a Network Engineer on the Capacity Restoration Team, you bring experience and autonomy to own end-to-end capacity restoration for assigned network segments. You drive complex troubleshooting across multiple failure domains, mentor engineers, define and improve operational processes, and partner with engineering teams to address systemic resilience gaps. You apply correct technologies and best practices to complex problems, and your scope of influence spans the full team.
Key job responsibilities
Operational Execution:
- Own capacity restoration outcomes for assigned network segments, driving TTR reduction and backlog elimination.
- Lead complex, multi-party troubleshooting for link and device failures spanning carriers, colocations, and internal teams.
- Participate in war rooms for critical events breaching container or region SLA thresholds.
- Participate in on-call rotations for follow-the-sun coverage.
Process and Operations Improvement:
- Define and improve operational processes and runbooks for restoration workflows.
- Analyze restoration metrics (TTR, backlog depth, network health score impact) to identify trends and drive improvements.
- Drive vendor accountability for carrier and colocation-related restoration delays.
Cross-Team Collaboration:
- Partner with Topology Engineering, Capacity Engineering, and fabric engineering teams to address systemic issues.
- Represent Capacity Restoration Team in cross-organizational reviews and operational planning.
Mentorship and Development:
- Mentor and develop Network Engineers, providing technical guidance and review.
- Contribute to hiring loops and technical assessments.
A day in the life
- Lead complex capacity restoration events involving multiple network layers and cross-region links.
- Drive root-cause analysis and develop remediation plans for recurring failures.
- Improve operational processes, runbooks, and escalation procedures based on observed patterns.
- Mentor engineers and conduct knowledge transfer sessions.
- Coordinate with engineering teams on platform readiness and design validation.
- Drive vendor and carrier accountability for restoration delays.
- Represent Capacity Restoration Team in cross-organizational reviews and operational planning.
- Participate in war rooms for major events breaching container or region SLA thresholds.
About the team
The Capacity Restoration Team (CRT) sits within Backbone, Enterprise, Regional Engineering (BERE) organization. Our mission is to own end-to-end restoration of out-of-service inter-metro and intra-metro network capacity.
CRT reduces operational backlog, improves network health monitoring systems, and drives time-to-remediate (TTR) down. Today, a significant network capacity is out of service at any given time. The operational workload is capacity related and heavily manual and we are building the team and automation to change that.
We operate across Seattle, Dublin, Hyderabad, and Sydney for follow-the-sun coverage. CRT acts as the connective layer between Engineering, Operations, Tooling, and Software teams.
