Description
Join our Data Center Design Engineering team as a DC Design Program Manager, where you'll drive operational excellence across our EMEA and APAC data center builds. You'll partner with cross-functional stakeholders to establish meaningful metrics, streamline processes, and accelerate time-to-market while maintaining design quality and cost performance at scale.
The Role
The Technical Project Manager (TPM) supports the Data Center Design Engineering Team in driving programme-level operational excellence initiatives and associated reporting across the EMEA/APAC regions. This role owns the programme management lifecycle for schedule, goals, initiatives, design quality and cost performance across our data centre builds.
Working hand-in-hand with stakeholders across Data Center Planning and Delivery (DCPD), Infrastructure Supply Chain & Procurement, Technical Engineering and Finance, you will develop and define meaningful metrics, establish reporting mechanisms, and identify program acceleration opportunities that improve time-to-market and design efficiency at scale.
About AIS
AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Key job responsibilities
Scope & Influence
This role operates at the organisational level, partnering with system owners and senior leaders to shape programme strategy and drive engineering decisions across the DCDE APAC & EMEA portfolio.
You will:
- Work within and across the DCDE APAC & EMEA organisation to deliver complex, cross-functional programmes.
- Advise Sr. Managers, Directors and regional leadership on schedule health, risk posture, and cost trajectory.
- Influence engineering priorities through data-driven programme insights.
- Manage the lifecycle of complex cross-functional initiatives from concept through delivery.
Programme Reporting & Governance
- Own and deliver programme-level reporting on schedule adherence, milestone tracking, and critical-path risk for all active APAC & EMEA builds.
- Develop and maintain dashboards and mechanisms that provide leadership with real-time visibility into design progress, blockers and decisions required.
- Drive weekly/monthly programme reviews, ensuring crisp communication of status, risks, and path-to-green actions.
- Establish reporting cadences aligned with global DE programme governance frameworks.
Goals & Initiatives Management
- Support definition, tracking and reporting of organisational goals (OP1/OP2), ensuring alignment between regional initiatives and global DE strategy.
- Own initiative-level planning: scope definition, resource requirements, dependency mapping and timeline management.
- Drive crisp and timely decisions across the initiative portfolio; prioritise and sequence work to maximise impact.
- Identify and clear blockers; escalate effectively when cross-organisational alignment is required.
Design Quality & Cost Performance
- Partner with discipline leads (Design Management, Civil, Structural, Architectural Electrical, Mechanical, Controls) to define and track design quality metrics.
- Develop mechanisms to monitor cost performance of designs against budgets, identifying variance trends and improvement opportunities.
- Work with Finance and Estimating partners to drive meaningful cost and efficiency benchmarks across the portfolio.
- Drive root-cause analysis when quality or cost targets are missed; ensure corrective actions are tracked to completion.
Stakeholder Engagement & Metrics
- Work hand-in-hand with stakeholders (Construction, Commissioning, CRE, GES, Finance) to define meaningful, actionable metrics.
- Build consensus across teams on metric definitions, data sources, and reporting standards.
- Translate complex programme data into clear narratives for leadership consumption.
- Represent DCDE APAC & EMEA in cross-functional programme forums and global alignment discussions.
Programme Acceleration
- Identify and drive programme acceleration opportunities — removing unnecessary process, streamlining handoffs, and eliminating waste.
- Proactively surface schedule compression opportunities through parallel-path strategies and early constraint resolution.
- Develop and implement mechanisms that increase speed of delivery without compromising design quality or safety standards.
- Benchmark delivery timelines and drive continuous improvement against prior builds.
A day in the life
As a Senior Design Program Manager - Data Centre Engineering, you'll focus on delivering program-level visibility and driving efficiency across our data center design portfolio. Your day might include facilitating a weekly program review with regional leadership to discuss schedule health and critical risks, then collaborating with design discipline leads to analyze cost performance trends and identify improvement opportunities. You'll work with Finance partners to benchmark delivery timelines, develop dashboards that surface real-time progress to stakeholders, and identify blockers that need cross-organizational alignment. You'll also spend time translating complex program data into clear narratives for senior leaders and exploring ways to streamline handoffs and compress schedules without compromising quality or safety standards.
