We are seeking a Senior Supplier Quality Engineer to ensure suppliers consistently deliver conforming, reliable parts. This role owns supplier quality from sourcing and qualification through new product introduction, production ramp, sustaining, and end-of-life. The mission: prevent defects at the supplier, detect risk before shipment, and protect operations and customers from supplier escapes.
You will set the supplier quality strategy for complex mechanical, electrical, and electromechanical components; lead supplier readiness and approval; establish measurable quality requirements; and hold suppliers accountable for process control, traceability, corrective action, and continuous improvement. You will work directly with suppliers and partner with Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, and Operations to make evidence-based sourcing, release, escalation, and recovery decisions.
Key job responsibilities
Supplier Selection & Qualification
- Assess supplier facilities, quality systems, processes, capacity, and sub-tier controls; own quality from source evaluation to production release.
- Define supplier quality requirements — CTQ characteristics, acceptance criteria, documentation, and change notification — in drawings, specs, and quality agreements before award.
- Conduct risk-based supplier and process audits, verifying special processes, calibration, material control, and error-proofing on site.
- Provide the independent recommendation for source selection, approval, escalation, or disqualification, with documented risks and mitigations.
- Build risk-based surveillance plans with clear escalation triggers; travel to supplier sites as needed.
APQP, PPAP & New Product Introduction
- Lead supplier APQP for new products and engineering changes — process flows, PFMEAs, control plans, MSA, and capability studies.
- Own PPAP and first-article approval; verify drawing compliance, material certs, dimensional, and functional evidence before authorizing shipment.
- Define launch controls (safe-launch inspection, Run-at-Rate, first-off/last-off) and release suppliers only after demonstrated stability.
- Partner with Design and Manufacturing Engineering to improve manufacturability and convert design risk into practical supplier controls.
Process Control & Shipment Assurance
- Require capable measurement systems, SPC, reaction plans, and documented traceability for critical and special characteristics.
- Review MSA/Gage R&R, Cpk/Ppk, control charts, and yield data; drive corrective action when the process is not stable and capable.
- Set source-inspection and shipment-release requirements for high-risk components, driving controls upstream to the point of manufacture.
Containment & Corrective Action
- Lead rapid containment for supplier escapes — define scope by lot, serial, and date code, and coordinate stop-ship, quarantine, and recovery.
- Issue and own SCARs and 8D investigations; require verified root cause, systemic corrective action, and effectiveness evidence before closure.
- Ensure deviations are risk-assessed, traceable, time-limited, and quantity-limited; drive formal escalation and verify recovery on site.
Change Control & Supplier Performance
- Control supplier-initiated changes to material, process, tooling, software, site, and sub-tier; require notification, validation, and approval before shipment.
- Own supplier scorecards (PPM, escape rate, first-pass yield, COPQ, audit findings) and convert trends into prioritized actions and sourcing recommendations.
- Develop underperforming suppliers through coaching, improved controls, and verified sustained gains.
