Network Development Engineer II, OTN-Core Engineering (LAN)

Amazon Fulfillment Technologies & Robotics

Amazon Fulfillment Technologies & Robotics

Dublin, Ireland
Posted on Mar 3, 2026

Description

The OpsTech Networking Core team builds and operates the LAN infrastructure that powers Amazon's global fulfillment centers, transportation sites, and grocery operations. The team manages campus network architecture, LAN switching, network segmentation, and large-scale network automation across thousands of sites worldwide, supporting hundreds of thousands of LAN devices at massive scale.

We are seeking a Network Development Engineer II to design and implement next-generation LAN architecture. You will work on initiatives that improve network reliability through self-healing automation that detects and remediates LAN infrastructure incidents autonomously, eliminate proprietary switching dependencies to enable maintenance-free operations, and modernize network designs by replacing legacy vendor-locked architectures with scalable, vendor-agnostic solutions using commodity hardware and open protocols. Your work will directly impact network uptime, operational efficiency, and the ability to launch and support new sites across Amazon's global operations.

Key job responsibilities
As an NDE II on the Core team, you will solve complex technical problems involving enterprise LAN switching and routing, campus network design, network segmentation architecture, and large-scale configuration automation. You will design solutions that are scalable, testable, maintainable, and efficient. You will work with technologies including EVPN, LISP, BGP, OSPF, VRF segmentation, and commodity networking hardware running Software Defined Infrastructure. Information security and network reliability are fundamental to your approach. You will work autonomously on major portions of LAN technology implementation, applying best practices while making pragmatic trade-offs that consider both short-term operational needs and long-term business requirements.

You will operate the largest fulfillment network in the world, working with technologies including enterprise switching platforms, overlay network protocols, zone-based network segmentation, industrial networking for robotics and material handling equipment, and large-scale configuration orchestration across hundreds of thousands of devices. You will leverage AI and ML-powered tools to enhance network operations, including automated incident detection and remediation, pattern recognition for proactive fault management, and agentic AWS AI tools for diagnostics and operational efficiency. You will collaborate with customers and stakeholders to develop project ideas into project plans, participate actively in design reviews and operational reviews, and mentor team members. Network reliability is essential to Amazon Operations, and your responsibilities include driving root cause resolution of network events most impactful to the business.

Basic Qualifications

- Bachelor's degree or above in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related fields at time of application, or experience from a technical internship
- Master's degree, or a Bachelor's degree and experience working in a large-scale networking environment
- * Three or more years of experience with major routing protocols, specifically BGP and OSPF (CCNP/CCIE level of knowledge)
- * Three or more years of experience with routing and switching hardware from major vendors including Cisco and Juniper
- * Network automation experience (Python)
- * Demonstrated ability to design, implement, and operate network solutions that are secure, stable, testable, and maintainable
- * Strong documentation skills with proven methodology for creating clear technical documentation
- * Experience building or enhancing tools, developing best practices, refining operational procedures, and thinking proactively with innovation
- * Ability to work effectively on diverse teams with diverse co-workers

Preferred Qualifications

- * CCIE Routing & Switching or equivalent
- * Experience with LAN overlay technologies such as EVPN, VXLAN, LISP, and Layer-3 fabric architectures
- * Experience with network segmentation architectures including VRF design, zone-based security models, and firewall integration
- * Experience with Software Defined Infrastructure (SDI) or commodity networking hardware and open network operating systems
- * Experience with large-scale configuration management and orchestration across tens of thousands of network devices
- * Experience with AI and ML-powered tools for network automation, incident detection, and operational efficiency, including agentic AWS AI tools such as Kiro
- * Experience in automating network administration using Python or other programming languages
- * Development and delivery of large-scale LAN designs in campus or fulfillment center environments
- * Experience with IPv6 design and implementations
- * Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to collaborate across organizations
- * Experience with network automation, CI/CD pipelines, and zero-touch provisioning for network devices
- * Experience with industrial networking environments including operational technology (OT), industrial Ethernet switches, and control system networks
- * Understanding of information security principles for network infrastructure
- * Experience with firmware lifecycle management and compliance across large device fleets
- * Experience with traffic shifting, non-disruptive upgrade methodologies, and high-availability LAN architectures
