Description

We are looking for a Robotics Platform Engineer to extend and optimize the core software platform powering our robots. In this role, you will architect and develop the backbone of our robotics stack—including communications infrastructure, service orchestration, and the integration layer that enables perception, planning, and control modules to operate seamlessly. You will also optimize platform components to run efficiently on resource-constrained edge devices and interface with low-level firmware, both developed in-house and sourced from partners.
This role sits at the intersection of our software stack, bridging low-Level embedded systems with high-Level AI capabilities. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams across the organization to ensure the platform remains performant, scalable, and reliable as we continue to expand our capabilities.

Key job responsibilities
- Architect and extend the robotics platform backbone, including inter-process communication (IPC), service orchestration, and resource management.
- Optimize platform components for performance on resource-constrained edge devices, ensuring real-time operation and efficient resource utilization.
- Interface with low-Level firmware layers—both in-house and from external partners—to integrate hardware capabilities into the platform.
- Develop robust logging, diagnostics, and debugging tooling for on-robot systems.
- Partner with perception, planning, and controls teams to define clear platform interfaces and drive new capabilities forward.
- Contribute to testing and simulation infrastructure to validate platform reliability and performance.

About the team
Fauna Robotics, an Amazon company, is building capable, safe, and genuinely delightful robots for everyday life. Our goal is simple: make robots people actually want to live and interact with in everyday human spaces.
We believe that future won’t arrive until building for robotics becomes far more accessible. Today, too much effort is spent reinventing the fundamentals. We’re changing that by developing tightly integrated hardware and software systems that make it faster, safer, and more intuitive to create real-world robotic products.
Our work spans the full stack: mechanical design, control systems, dynamic modeling, and intelligent software. The focus is not just functionality, but experience. We’re building robots that feel responsive, expressive, and genuinely useful.
At Fauna, you’ll work at the frontier of this space, helping define how robots move, manipulate, and interact with people in natural environments. It’s an opportunity to solve hard problems across hardware and software with a team focused on making robotics accessible and joyful to build.
If you care about making robotics real for everyone and building systems that are as delightful as they are capable, we’re interested in hearing from you.

Basic Qualifications

- 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team
- Master's degree in computer science or electrical engineering, or 2+ years of electrical theory, robotics, controls components, and automated equipment experience
- Proficiency in C++ and Python for systems-Level development
- Hands-on experience designing and deploying with ROS2
- Demonstrated experience with real-time systems and performance-critical software
- Strong understanding of operating system fundamentals, including Linux kernel internals, process scheduling, and inter-process communication (IPC)

Preferred Qualifications

- 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- 3+ years of embedded firmware development experience
- Familiarity with NVIDIA platforms (Jetson, Isaac SDK) and their associated software ecosystems
- Experience with embedded Linux and custom OS image builds using tools such as Yocto or Buildroot
- Familiarity with robotics simulation environments (e.g., Gazebo, Isaac Sim) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing methodologies
