Imagine what you could do here! The people here at Apple don’t just create products — they build the kind of wonder that’s revolutionized entire industries. It’s the diversity of those people and their ideas that inspires the innovation that runs through everything we do, from amazing technology to industry-leading environmental efforts. At Apple, inclusion is a shared responsibility, and we work together to foster a culture where everyone belongs and is inspired to do their best work. We’re a diverse collective of thinkers and doers, continuously reimagining our products and practices to help people do what they love in new ways. That innovation is inspired by a shared commitment to great work — and to each other. Because learning from the people here means we’re learning from the best. Retail Operations creates the tools and programs that empower our teams to provide, a one of a kind, only at Apple experience. We do this by obsessing over the employee and customer experience, and driving a global strategy that sets the bar.
The Retail Technology, Demo Production Engineering team is responsible for prototyping, mastering, validating and deploying innovative demo experiences to Apple Stores globally. You’ll be part of a dynamic team of engineers who partner cross-functionally, impacting tens of thousands of Apple devices, across 500+ stores worldwide. Every device a customer picks up in an Apple Store reflects the precision and care this team puts into every build.
- We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to own the macOS production engineering function. This work includes crafting precise, high-quality demo images, building the automation that makes production faster and more reliable, and ensuring the scaleability of our delivery pipelines.
- Successful candidates are humble, curious, creative, tenacious, organized, have clarity of thought and possess automation depth as well as macOS platform expertise.
- Own end-to-end macOS demo production: Bundle configuration, system customization and validation across Apple silicon platforms, executing multi-bundle build workflows with precision, against a POR encapsulating expanded complexity of Apple’s latest hardware, software and services
- Build, maintain, and modernize automation tooling and production systems: Designing extensible frameworks for loading content, settings, configurations, and apps onto demo devices across multiple locales at scale; re-architecting legacy workflows to increase throughput, reduce manual error, and eliminate technical debt
- Produce, validate and operationalize distribution of demo bundles to stores: Upload content to hubs, mapping content to 500+ retail stores across 32 locales. Maintain production runbooks, validation checklists, and release documentation
- Align with CoreOS release schedules to validate compatibility ahead of OS and hardware launch milestones
- Serve as the Tier 3/4 escalation point for macOS demo production issues. Triage, troubleshoot, and resolve with clear root cause analysis.
- Engineer prototypes and automation to validate new demo experience ideas. Research and document macOS capabilities to ensure we are innovating on latest technologies and feature demos for customers
- BA/BS in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on macOS systems or platform engineering experience, with deep knowledge of macOS internals, e.g. system configuration, folder permissions, disk image authoring, OS-level customization, and package management
- Strong automation engineering skills in Python and/or Swift. Demonstrated ability to design, build, and maintain frameworks that replace manual workflows and scale reliably
- Experience managing large libraries of software configurations, test suites, or build workflows. Demonstrate the precision, rigor and discipline to keep complex systems clean and auditable
- Familiarity with real-world macOS applications and workflows. Understand how professional software runs on Mac hardware is an asset in a role where every app on every demo device must perform exactly as a customer expects
- Cross-functional collaboration with engineers, analysts, and program managers in a fast-paced environment
- Comfortable working to precise, non-negotiable release deadlines tied to Apple's product and software calendars
- Expert knowledge of UNIX/ LINUX environments and setup tools (ssh, telnet, rsync, etc), critical for system management and troubleshooting
- Experience with Mobile Device Management frameworks (JAMF preferred), deploying applications, configurations via packages over MDM
- Demonstrated ability to ensure seamless device provisioning, configuration and system interoperability
- Experience with QA, specifically with developing integrated testing strategies, frameworks such as XCTest and pyTest
