The Camera Systems Engineering group is responsible for the simulation, calibration, and analysis of camera systems across Apple products. The Color Science team develops simulation-driven models and methods to predict, evaluate, and optimize color performance from individual optical components through to final image quality. Our work informs architecture decisions, sets manufacturing specifications, and de-risks new camera technologies early in the product cycle.
As a Color Science Engineer you will help to build the next generation of camera color technology. In this role, you will develop spectral simulation and modeling tools to quantify how component-level variation impacts system-level color performance, define specifications grounded in Monte Carlo error budgets, and evaluate emerging sensor architectures and optical technologies. You will work cross-functionally with sensor, optics, ISP, architecture and other teams to translate findings into actionable recommendations.
- Develop and extend spectral simulation frameworks to model camera color performance from component through system level
- Build Monte Carlo pipelines to quantify how part-to-part variation in optical components propagate to image quality impact
- Define color performance specifications grounded in simulation-driven error budgets — moving from empirical observation to predictive, quantitative spec-setting
- Evaluate emerging sensor architectures and optical technologies for color performance implications
- Perform spectral and colorimetric measurements in the lab and connect characterization results to manufacturing specifications
- Analyze large data sets to validate simulation predictions against factory and lab measurements
- Document system requirements, architectures, and specifications for color calibration and correction procedures
- Collaborate cross-functionally to drive color-related hardware decisions
- Bachelor's degree in Color/Imaging Science, Physics, Optical Engineering, EE, or a relevant field
- Experience in color or vision science, including color/spectral measurement and color appearance
- Experience programming in Python and/or Matlab
- MS/PhD in Color/Imaging Science or a related field and 3+ years of relevant industry experience
- Experience with spectral simulation or modeling of physical/optical systems and their impact on color response, including familiarity with ISP pipeline concepts such as AWB and color management
- Experience in statistical modeling, error analysis, or Monte Carlo methods
- Experience with two or more of the following: spectrometers, monochromators, goniometers and ability to relate measurement precision/accuracy to international standards
- Experience connecting lab characterization of camera systems to manufacturing specs as they relate to color performance
- Experience with AI/ML tools applied to engineering workflows
- Experience distilling complex technical analysis into clear recommendations for cross-functional and leadership audiences
