The ASE Device Infrastructure Compute Engineering team is seeking a results driven and meticulously organized Device Fleet and Infrastructure Engineer. We manage a fleet of thousands of Apple devices used in a centralized, automated test system which is a critical tool used by engineers developing for iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS. This position will provide the opportunity to work with the latest Apple hardware and software and be part of a rapidly growing organization.
This role supports Apple’s internal device-testing fleet of more than 30,000 devices and growing, including iPhone, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Watch, and future products. The engineer will maintain the device, lab, server, network, and automation infrastructure required to provide a stable and reliable testing environment. This position also leads complex operational initiatives, partners with engineering and cross-functional teams, and improves fleet reliability through automation, monitoring, and Site Reliability Engineering practices.
- Prepare, deploy, administer, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain Apple devices and systems used for testing, including prototypes, test configurations, and remote systems running macOS, iOS, and other Apple operating systems.
- Manage the complete hardware and infrastructure lifecycle, including qualification, New Product Introduction, inventory tracking, fleet deployment, rack-and-stack installation, maintenance, commissioning, decommissioning, and equipment retirement.
- Install, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory, server, network, and security infrastructure, including switches, firewalls, wireless equipment, DNS, DHCP, IP address management, power, cooling, and monitoring systems.
- Develop and maintain automation using Python, Ansible, Git, and related tools; improve the automated device-management platform and replace manual or repetitive processes with scalable solutions.
- Apply Site Reliability Engineering practices by maintaining actionable monitoring and alerts, validating production changes, analyzing system performance, participating in on-call rotations, responding to incidents, and implementing post-incident corrective actions.
- Lead operational initiatives and collaborate with engineering, networking, facilities, security, and leadership teams across locations and time zones, clearly communicating project status, service health, risks, and technical issues.
- Extensive experience administering, deploying, repairing, and troubleshooting Apple hardware, macOS, iOS, and related device technologies in a large-scale or automated testing environment.
- Advanced knowledge of enterprise networking, including Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP, IP address management, wireless networking, firewalls, and network-security principles.
- Experience installing, operating, and maintaining laboratory, server, data-center, or comparable infrastructure, including racks, power, cooling, equipment placement, and hardware lifecycle management.
- Experience writing and maintaining Python scripts and Ansible playbooks, with strong working knowledge of Git and code-review platforms such as GitHub.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex, interconnected hardware, software, network, and service environments and to break down ambiguous problems into practical solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, collaboration, organizational, and leadership skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively across technical and nontechnical teams.
- Ability to work in laboratory and server-room environments.
- Ability to install, move, organize, and maintain devices, servers, network equipment, and related infrastructure.
- Ability to lift, carry, and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- 10 or more years of experience supporting Apple products, automated device laboratories, large-scale device fleets, infrastructure operations, or a comparable technical environment.
- Direct experience with hardware qualification, New Product Introduction, production validation, and the commissioning and decommissioning of laboratories or automation centers.
- Experience with Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet firewalls and with Cisco, Ubiquiti, or Meraki wireless technologies.
- Experience with Kea DHCP, Infoblox, DNS platforms, and enterprise IP address-management systems.
- Experience applying Site Reliability Engineering principles, including service monitoring, actionable alerting, incident response, post-incident reviews, capacity analysis, and reliability improvement.
- Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
