Do you love taking on big challenges that require exceptionally creative solutions? Do you have a deep understanding of what an incredible camera experience should be? As part of our Camera Hardware Technologies group, you’ll help design the innovative technology that pushes the boundaries of imaging and sensing in each generation of Apple products. You’ll design and develop groundbreaking ideas for everything involved in our camera systems, from visible and IR illumination sources to sensors. You’ll collaborate with teams across Apple to research, design, develop, test, and qualify camera hardware for Apple products. Together, we’ll craft an imaging and optical sensing experience that redefines what millions of customers can expect from their Apple devices.
As a Camera Hardware Laser Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for the design and development of innovative camera hardware, including visible and IR illumination technologies that enhance the imaging and depth sensing capabilities of Apple products. You will ensure optically safe illumination architecture of these applications. The primary responsibility of the person in this job is the ownership of end-to-end laser safety of illumination modules from architecture and design to validation and high-volume production.
  • Design, implement, and specify optical and electrical subsystems architecture for mitigating optical hazards
  • Validate optical safety architecture using simulations (LightTools, Zemax, Matlab) and experimental lab setups
  • Collaborate with x-functional teams (system, optical, electrical, product safety, firmware, operations, etc.) to understand and solve issues related to design and implementation of laser safety architecture and processes
  • Use analytical methods (FMEA, FTA) to track use cases and failure modes that violate laser safety compliance
  • Stay abreast of the latest industry optical radiation safety specifications such as IEC-60825, IEC-62471, IEC-62368, etc.
  • BS in Physics, Electrical or Optical Engineering, or equivalent, and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with free-space laser and/or optical systems engineering for imaging and sensing.
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams (optical, electrical, mechanical).
  • Experience with optical modeling (LightTools, Zemax, CodeV, etc.) and/or data analysis (Matlab, JMP, etc.) software.
  • MS, or PhD degree in Physics, Electrical or Optical Engineering or related field.
  • Industry experience in developing high-volume electro-optical modules.
  • Experience working with optical safety standards IEC-60825 and IEC-62471.
  • Experience with manufacturing statistics/Monte Carlo simulations.
  • Experience in custom silicon design is a plus.
  • Experience with component, module, and system-level design, process, and test compliance documentation to enable manufacturability in high volume is a plus.
