Utilities and Infrastructure Engineer

The Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS)—the world’s first heavy-ion superconducting linear accelerator—has operated for more than four decades as a user facility advancing nuclear physics and its applications. ATLAS relies on robust utilities infrastructure, including AC electrical distribution, process water, and HVAC systems. We are seeking an experienced Facility Engineer to lead the design, installation, operation, and reliability of these systems in support of accelerator operations and experiments.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the conceptual design, layout, and installation of new utilities to support accelerator equipment and experimental setups
Maintain and improve existing utilities to ensure highly reliable, continuous operations
Troubleshoot and repair electrical distribution and piping systems
Provide day-to-day support to ATLAS Operations for AC power distribution and water cooling services
Plan, coordinate, and execute utility interruptions and installations with Laboratory personnel, building maintenance mechanics, and ATLAS Operations
Provide technical support for developing, building, modifying, and maintaining a variety of laboratory-based equipment
Perform operational evaluations; conduct experiments and testing; analyze data; support designs; and carry out inspections to validate system performance and compliance
Position Requirements
Proficiency in the safe use and best practices of hand tools and hand-held power tools
Proficiency with primary AC electrical distribution systems up to 480 V
Experience fabricating parts using basic shop tools
Experience logging and documenting system maintenance, performance, and modifications
Ability to work independently from verbal and written instructions
Experience with metal and plastic pipe fitting
Experience with HVAC equipment
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with relay logic, interlock systems, or basic computer programming
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawings
Experience with motor-driven equipment (e.g., blowers, fans, pumps)
Understanding of basic vacuum principles and best practices
Prior experience in an accelerator or similar research facility
Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and professional development
Proven ability to coordinate work across multidisciplinary teams
PT2: Bachelors and 2+ years of experience, or equivalent
The expected hiring range for this position is $67,639 - $106,724 annually
PT3: Bachelors and 4+ years of experience, Masters and 2+ years, or equivalent
The expected hiring range for this position is $83,264 - $131,342 annually
The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT2 or PT3) depending on relevant knowledge, skills, and experience. A long, proven track record of expertise involving similar work and use of like equipment will be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
