Description

The School of Technology for Public Health (STPH) at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a postdoctoral research scholar position in women’s and mental health services research and data science. The position is funded by multiple sources, including the NIH and STPH.

The research program (Mental Health Informatics Laboratory [MHIL] led by PI Jyotishman Pathak) at STPH has strong expertise and a track record in perinatal health services and outcomes research. MHIL is focused on developing cutting-edge machine learning and other informatics approaches, including mixed methods, to conducting outcomes research, using large administrative healthcare claims databases, electronic health records, social media and mHealth data. The post-doc will join a vibrant team of health services researchers, computer scientists, informaticians, statisticians, and clinicians (psychologists, psychiatrists, OB/GYNs) and will receive close mentorship for developing an independent research career as well as team science.

Specific areas of research and development interests for the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Women’s health and mental health services research
  • Data mining and machine learning methods
  • Study design and implementation using large administrative (claims) and EHR dataNatural language processing
  • Mixed-methods research

As part of a bold new initiative to transform public health, the newly established School of Technology for Public Health (STPH) at Arizona State University (ASU) is establishing a new field to reimagine public health infrastructure in the 21st century, and create more integrative, responsive, and resilient systems to protect the health of people in Arizona and beyond. Qualifications

Essential Functions of the Position

  • Pursue scholarly activities in women’s and maternal health outcomes research using multimodal data from electronic health records, insurance claims, survey data etc.
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference presentations and seminars.
  • Participate and/or lead in research grant proposal application submissions.
  • Provide mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students.

Qualifications and Characteristics

Successful candidates will engage in scholarly research and may be asked to perform duties common to academic personnel, including grant writing and teaching.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent in health economics/services research, biomedical informatics, computer science, health information technology, biostatistics, or a related field.
  • Applicants will have a record of significant research accomplishments as evidenced by work experience and publications in top-tier journals and conferences in informatics, computer sciences, and mental health research.
  • The successful candidate will also have a track record of working with an interdisciplinary team, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong working experience with electronic health records and insurance claims data,
  • Programming with SAS/STATA, Python, R, or MATLAB is a plus.

This position is located at Arizona State University’s Downtown campus in Phoenix. All postdoctoral fellowship positions are for one year. Options for an additional year of funding may be offered, depending on each fellow’s progress and training needs.
