Economic Data News Editor - Tokyo
Bloomberg
Bloomberg News is one of the biggest financial and business news organizations in the world. We lead the way in breaking news and providing analysis on financial markets, from intraday coverage through in-depth features. We are known for our quality, accuracy and ability to deliver news investors can use. It's what keeps us inventing and re-inventing, all the time.
At Bloomberg News, our journalism moves markets. From GDP and inflation to central bank policy and employment figures, our coverage helps investors, policymakers and business leaders understand what’s happening, and what’s next.
We’re now seeking an Economic Data News Editor in Tokyo to play a central role in our real-time reporting on Japan and the wider Asia-Pacific economy.
This is a unique opportunity to sit at the intersection of journalism, economics and technology. You’ll join the Asia-Pacific Economic Data News team, which tracks the region’s key indicators — the numbers that drive global markets.
As an editor, you’ll publish and contextualize figures within seconds of release, survey economists to build forecasts and find smarter, faster ways to turn complex information into clear, actionable insights for Bloomberg clients and the wider public.
Whether you’re a journalist expanding your analytical skills, a data professional eager to work closer to news or a product specialist passionate about how information reaches users — this role offers a chance to make a direct impact in one of Bloomberg’s most visible functions, at the forefront of how AI and automation are transforming real-time journalism.
Here, your ideas can shape how millions of people around the world understand Japan’s economy — and your career can evolve across disciplines as quickly as the markets we cover.
We'll trust you to:
- Report on economic indicators with accuracy, speed and insight
- Survey economists to compile forecasts for key releases across Asia
- Collaborate across teams — working with reporters, data analysts, product managers and technologists to enhance our coverage and workflows
- Experiment with AI and automation to improve the speed and depth of our reporting
- Reimagine how Bloomberg collects, processes and presents information to deliver real-time insights that move markets
- Contribute ideas to elevate how Bloomberg explains macroeconomic trends to a global audience
You'll need to have:
- At least 3 years of experience in journalism, economics, finance, data analysis or product development
- Python skills and a working knowledge of Excel VBA
- Fluency in both written and spoken English and Japanese
- A calm, detail-oriented mindset under deadline pressure
- Curiosity about how economies work, how data shapes decisions and how emerging technologies like AI can enhance the speed, accuracy and depth of economic reporting
- Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization
We'd love to see:
- Familiarity with the Bloomberg Terminal
- Experience working in a real-time or financial news environment
- A passion for storytelling through numbers
