With over 50 economists and 200 economics and government reporters worldwide, Bloomberg has an outstanding capacity to explain where the world is economically and politically, where it might be heading, and the ways in which economic and geopolitical forces interact.
Bloomberg Economics already offers a comprehensive macroeconomic research service for Terminal subscribers. That includes detailed forecasts, supported by thorough and original thematic research.
As a next step, we are expanding our geoeconomics research and building out our global coverage of key countries and regions. The goal is to offer Bloomberg clients a deeper insight into the themes that drive economics, markets, and policy.
We are seeking an expert on China to join our growing team. The position is preferably based in Hong Kong, Taipei, or Singapore. The successful candidate will work with Bloomberg’s chief geoeconomics analyst, senior geoeconomics analyst for the Asia‑Pacific and other members of the team on research projects aimed at helping our clients understand Chinese leaders and domestic politics.
Short‑turnaround projects will include quick analysis of significant political and geopolitical events, from high‑level Party and government conclaves to elite turnover. Longer‑term projects will include taking the lead in building data sets, models, and other frameworks that provide a more systematic way of understanding Chinese leaders and domestic politics, how they interact with geopolitics and economics, and what they mean for global business and markets. We’ll measure success by the breadth and depth of our analysis on this growing area of focus for Bloomberg clients.
We’ll trust you to:
  • Take the lead in building out the teams' knowledge on Chinese leaders and domestic politics
  • Develop and execute your own ideas for research projects, in addition to supporting collaborative projects
  • In line with experience, represent the team at client events, on Bloomberg TV and radio, and more broadly
  • From time to time, work with Bloomberg’s economic and government reporters on joint projects
You’ll need to have:
  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience and demonstrated expertise in Chinese domestic politics
  • Experience working on questions at the intersection of politics, geopolitics, the economy and financial markets
  • A degree in political science, international relations, regional studies, economics, or a related field. A graduate degree would be a plus
  • Strong writing, communication and teamwork skills.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Mandarin
  • Energy and the initiative to provide a consistent flow of original, high‑quality analysis and to operate in a collaborative, fast‑paced, and dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization
We’d love to see:
  • Experience working or living in or significant exposure to China.
  • Experience working in government or an international institution on China.
  • Experience and/or exposure to programming software (Python preferred) for data manipulation and model building as well as exposure and use of modern AI coding assistants such as Claude Code and Cursor.
  • Experience generating content across a variety of formats, ranging from rapid turnaround responses to events to longer‑term collaborative research.
  • Additional expertise in data science, political science, economics, military studies, international trade and investment, geoeconomics analysis, or other regional or functional areas a plus.
