Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science is seeking a highly motivated Data Center Assistant Manager to join our Computing Facilities team. In this pivotal role, you will contribute to the seamless operation of our data centers, which support the groundbreaking research and computing infrastructure driving the university’s world-renowned academic and research programs.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to engage with innovative technology, from server installations to power and cooling systems, while managing the essential infrastructure that fuels our research efforts. You will lead initiatives to resolve complex technical issues and implement process improvements that improve efficiency and reliability. Working with multi-functional teams, you will ensure the highest levels of safety and operational excellence, and craft the future of data center management in one of the country's top computer science programs.

Core responsibilities will include:

  • Develop capacity plans and maintain records of circuit locations for analysis and future provisioning.

  • Plan, coordinate, and lead installation and maintenance of data center infrastructure, while maintaining comprehensive documentation of operations, layouts, and safety procedures.

  • Lead continuous improvements, collaborating with engineering staff to implement monitoring resources and standard methodologies to improve safety and reliability.

  • Provide operational support for multiple data centers, ensuring compliance with policies, solving issues, and conducting root cause analysis to implement improvements.

  • Monitor system and environmental status using dashboards, and respond according to detailed protocols.

  • Rack and connect servers, ensuring power and cooling requirements are met, and conduct audits of power distribution.

  • Provide hands-on training and simulations for Data Center staff ensuring alignment to policies and safety standards.

  • Collaborate with team members to ensure timely identification and resolution of operational issues.

  • Develop proposals for transitioning data centers to fully lights-out operations.

  • Directly supervises other staff members responsible for supporting SCS's data centers.

Should demonstrate:

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and proficiency with data center infrastructure and operations.

  • Understanding of electrical circuits, power distribution systems, and standard methodologies for data center operations.

  • Intermediate proficiency with computers and the ability to quickly learn new procedures and technologies.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Training: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • 3+ years of demonstrated ability in data center operations

Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 30 pounds of equipment or materials.

  • Successful background check

Additional Desirable Skills

  • Experience working in a Lights-Out data center environment.

  • Previous experience as a computer operator or system administrator.

  • Understanding of enterprise networks, subnets, and VLANs.

  • Knowledge of risk management and safety protocols in data centers.
