Carnegie Mellon’s department of Chemical Engineering is looking for a Summer IT Associate Intern. The IT Intern role is a short-term, 3-month minimum IT support position. The primary focus of this role serves to provide assistance with all aspects of IT operations including asset and infrastructure management, technical support/user services, documentation and the planning and completion of IT projects. Due to the short length of the internship, interns will be expected to be complete and thorough in all documentation and communication so future interns or other IT personnel can continue efforts efficiently.

The IT intern position for summer 2025 is designed to expose candidates to the wide variety of issues and complex challenges faced by small IT teams. This role will demonstrate a wide variety of tasks in day-to-day IT operations that may not be encountered in a larger IT team since roles are often well-defined and siloed. As such, candidates will be required to participate in all aspects of IT operations.

Operations Functions:

  • Tech Support – Remote and in-person
  • System deployment and repair
  • Documentation (Internal and user facing)
  • Proactive asset inventorying, monitoring and management
  • Disaster Recovery Planning and Testing

During performance of these duties, special attention will be paid to furthering development of communication and problem-solving skills. Interns will receive regular feedback and guidance on how to approach tasks/projects and improve effectiveness of both oral and written communications.

In addition to assisting with IT operations, interns will be assigned to work on one or more existing or upcoming IT Projects.

Projects:

  • Development of attendance tracking Android and iOS apps with a focus on student privacy and security
  • Establishment of a plan and schedule for proactive and preventative maintenance of critical or at-risk systems and services

Interns will be expected to evaluate the current status of the selected project, review all previous work and requirements, attend status meetings as needed and provide a final written report on the internship activities.

Qualifications:

  • Any qualified individual may apply. Applicants should have extensive education or experience with windows, mac and Linux operating systems. Knowledge of obsolete operating systems/ hardware/ software not required, but will be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge or experience withLAN and WAN technologies and Information
    Security are crucial.
  • Applicants will be expected to work efficiently to meet pre-determined deadlines and maintain a high level of professionalism.
  • Well-developed problem solving and communication skills
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered
