Our Opportunity:
Chewy is seeking a Software Engineer II for our HR Systems & Solutions team in Boston, Minneapolis or Seattle. This team builds and deploys software products that power critical HR experiences and business operations across the company. In this role, you will develop, enhance, and support scalable applications, services, and integrations that improve how our HR organization operates and serves team members. This role will be working closely with our business partners, so strong communication skills are essential. Further, you will be on a high-performing engineering team where we value broad-based technical skills in cloud-based services, databases, information security, AI, MLOps and more. You will have the opportunity to collaborate across the HR and engineering organizations to deliver self-service solutions which empower internal customers to move rapidly while building on Chewy’s solid technical foundation.
What You’ll Do:
Design, build, test, deploy, and support software products and services for the HR organization
Build operational Human Resources applications and tools with a focus on data and AI that leverage Chewy’s proprietary AI and machine learning platforms.
Partner with Human Resources stakeholders to understand Chewy’s HR operating models and design solutions to help automate and optimize high-touch Human Resources business processes in a fast-paced 24x7 operating environment
Work closely with non-technical stakeholders to define requirements and translate those into technical deliverables
Contribute to AI-enabled features, intelligent automation, and agentic workflows that improve internal processes and user experiences
Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development
Think creatively to solve problems that don’t have existing solutions
Troubleshoot production issues, debug across systems, and support service reliability and operational health
Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and team engineering practices
Apply sound software engineering fundamentals to write high-quality, performant, and maintainable code
Continuously learn new technologies and contribute to a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement
What You’ll Need:
BS degree in Computer Science, a similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience
5+ years of strong programming experience with modern development technologies like Python, React and Java
Strong understanding of data models, SQL, APIs, Machine Learning and AI/LLM platforms
Demonstrate exceptional attention to detail by thoroughly analyzing production data, identifying root causes of issues, and driving timely, effective resolutions in high-impact environments
Experience working in a fast-paced e-commerce fulfillment, customer service or similar environment with large, non-exempt populations
Must be team oriented and have a customer first approach
Proficiency in Computer Science fundamentals – object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm - design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
Be a hands-on Engineer spending significant percentage of their time writing code or debugging issues
Knowledge of professional software engineering practices for the full software development life cycle including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
Experience evaluating, measuring, and tuning application performance
Experience with GitHub, DevOps, Jenkins, AWS and Terraform
Bonus (if applicable):
Experience supporting HR systems or other enterprise-wide internal business applications
Experience building and deploying agentic AI solutions to automate workflows, support decision-making, and improve internal user experiences
Familiarity with modern AI engineering patterns such as prompt orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation, model APIs, evaluation frameworks, or human-in-the-loop workflows
Experience with data engineering in large scale database environments, including utilities such as dbt or Apache Airflow
Experience with OpenAPI, Swagger, or stoplight.io
Experience with industry leading HCM Platforms, including Workday and UKG
Experience working in Agile development environments

The base salary range for this role is $120,000 - $190,000.00.
The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.

Exempt salary team members have unlimited PTO, subject to manager approval. Team members will receive six paid holidays per year. Team members may be eligible for paid sick and family leave in compliance with applicable state and local regulations.
