Job Description:

Our Opportunity:

Chewy is hiring a Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical direction of Chewy’s Discovery Experience platform in Bellevue, WA. The Discovery Experience team owns a key part of the customer journey across Chewy’s web and mobile apps. We help customers discover products through search results, browse listings, recommendations, and other related shopping experiences. We do this by building the UI surfaces that connect customers with Chewy’s search, recommendation, ML, and AI systems. This is an individual contributor role focused on technical leadership, architecture, and cross-functional execution. You will partner across product, design, data science, and engineering to define the technical direction of the team and deliver scalable, customer-facing solutions. Your work will influence one of Chewy’s fastest-growing areas and play a meaningful role in the future of product discovery at Chewy.

To be successful in the role, you will need to bring an AI-first approach to software development [CB1], a track record of building customer-facing applications at scale, and the technical judgment to apply emerging tools in practical, high-leverage ways. You will need to be able to operate at depth, understanding every detail of the organization’s product goals while maintaining the ability to “zoom out” and connect the dots across our technology stack. The role will have tremendous visibility in the product, technology & business organizations of Chewy.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead the development of all customer-facing components of Chewy’s Discovery experience, including our front-end web applications and APIs.
  • Help evolve and grow Chewy’s world-class search and recommendations system, serving millions of product search results and personalized content recommendations.
  • Have a relentless focus on scalability, latency, performance robustness, and cost trade-offs – especially those found in single-page web applications served through highly virtualized, elastic, cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Apply scientific analysis and mathematical modeling techniques to predict, measure, and evaluate the consequences of designs and the ongoing success of our platform.
  • Alongside a dedicated site reliability team, support the smooth 24x7 operation of our team’s services.
  • Work with Principal Engineers and Engineering Leaders to drive best practices in software development, testing, and production deployment across our organization.
  • Apply vision, strategy, and thought leadership to impact Chewy, at scale.

What You’ll Need:

  • 10+ years of industry experience building full-stack, customer-facing, web and mobile applications.
  • Deep expertise working with Next/React/Node/TypeScript and other core front-end technologies.
  • Hands-on mentality and willingness to spend a significant percentage of your time directing AI coding agents, reading code, architecting solutions, and debugging complex problems.
  • Ability to mentor and develop engineers through technical guidance, thoughtful feedback, and leading by example.
  • Solid communication skills and the ability to work well in a team-based environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical field.
  • Be located, or willing to relocate to be near our technical offices in Bellevue, WA.

Bonus:

  • Experience in E-Commerce.
  • Experience building Discovery, Search, or Recommendations experiences.
  • Experience designing Generative UIs for use with LLM Agents.
