Position Summary

The Staff Full-Stack Software Engineer (Tech Lead) is a senior individual contributor and hands-on technical leader responsible for building, architecting, and optimizing Caremark’s next-generation digital experiences across web, mobile, and API layers.

This role sets the technical direction for full-stack engineering teams, architects scalable and secure solutions, and ensures exceptional user experiences for millions of members, clients, and pharmacies. The Staff Engineer is a multiplier — elevating the engineering bar, mentoring teams, and driving the delivery of high-impact capabilities.

You will work across the full stack — React/React Native, Node/Java/Python/Go, GraphQL, microservices, cloud infrastructure (Azure/GCP), CI/CD pipelines, and observability — to deliver high-performance, reliable, and accessible digital products.

Key Responsibilities

1. Full-Stack Technical Leadership
• Architect end-to-end solutions spanning frontend, backend, APIs, cloud, and data layers.
• Lead the design and implementation of reusable components, UI libraries, GraphQL APIs, and microservices.
• Partner with UX and product leads to translate user journeys into scalable, secure digital experiences.
• Establish full-stack engineering standards, design patterns, and best practices.

2. Hands-on Engineering Excellence
• Write high-quality, production-ready code across both frontend and backend stacks.
• Drive complex debugging, performance tuning, and reliability improvements.
• Implement automated testing across UI, API, and service layers (unit, integration, E2E).
• Enforce secure coding practices and ensure compliance (HIPAA, PHI, PII).

3. API, Microservices & Cloud Architecture
• Build and evolve REST + GraphQL APIs, microservices (Java, Go, Node, Python), and orchestration layers.
• Advocate for modern client-server patterns such as BFF (Backend-for-Frontend) and distributed caching.
• Partner with Platform Engineering on cloud architecture, containers, Kubernetes, serverless, and CI/CD pipelines.

4. Ownership & Delivery Leadership
• Lead technical execution for major features, re-architecting efforts, or platform modernization initiatives.
• Break ambiguous problems into clear technical plans, sequencing, and deliverables.
• Conduct design reviews, code reviews, and architecture reviews across multiple teams.
• Identify technical risks, propose mitigation strategies, and ensure delivery excellence.

5. Influence & Cross-Functional Collaboration
• Collaborate with Product, Platform, AI, SRE, and Integration teams to deliver cohesive digital experiences.
• Influence engineering decisions across teams to maintain alignment with architecture and digital standards.
• Communicate technical strategy and trade-offs with leadership and stakeholders.

6. Mentorship & Engineering Culture
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers on full-stack development, architecture, and clean coding.
• Lead knowledge-sharing sessions and engineering workshops.
• Foster a culture of innovation, craftsmanship, accessibility, and continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications
• 10+ years of full-stack software engineering experience delivering large-scale digital products.
• Expert-level proficiency in:
Frontend: React, React Native, TypeScript, JavaScript
Backend: Java, Go, NodeJS, Python
APIs: REST, GraphQL, gRPC
Cloud: Azure, GCP, or AWS with Kubernetes/Docker
• Strong understanding of UX, accessibility (WCAG), responsive design, and performance optimization.
• Experience building resilient distributed systems and event-driven architectures (Kafka).
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD, automated testing, GitOps, and observability tooling.
• Strong architecture skills and familiarity with DDD, microservices, and modular monolith patterns.
• Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience building design systems, reusable UI frameworks, or component libraries.
• Experience integrating AI features (chatbots, personalization, translation).
• Experience with secure coding, OAuth2/OIDC, and API gateway patterns.
• Background in healthcare, PBM, fintech, or other regulated environments.
