Location - This role is in-person at North Campus Edmonton.

Located within the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta, the Settings-Based Intervention Research through Changes in Lifestyles and Environments (SIRCLE) research group conducts research with a goal to advance and mobilize knowledge in the area of school and community health. SIRCLE delivers and evaluates school- and community-based healthy living programs throughout Canada which promote wholistic health, prevent chronic diseases, and reduce health inequities. SIRCLE works to create systems-level change through projects that foster resilience and empowerment and builds on the strengths of communities. This research program is unique in evaluating the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ of school- and community-based health promotion interventions and aims to improve the overall health and well-being of children, families and communities. Using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, SIRCLE research evaluates the process, impact, and outcomes of health promotion interventions.

The Data Coordinator will be responsible for data management for the Healthy Schools | LINK | Écoles Saines Project within the SIRCLE Research Lab. The Data Coordinator will work closely with the Project Manager, Research Coordinator, and PI. They will coordinate data activities, specifically, the creation of an online evaluation tool for schools to measure shifts in school health. Activities include data refinement, coordination with partners, evaluation, and knowledge translation. They will also assist with ethics amendments, standard operating procedures and managing trainees.

The research program is part of One Child Every Child (OCEC): A Transformational Child Health Research Initiative that is a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) funded initiative. This ground-breaking initiative will transform child health research in Canada, promote Indigenous-led knowledge creation and self-determination, and drive discovery and innovation. One Child Every Child is a Parallel Paths project that has Indigenous and non-Indigenous Paths. Experience with Indigenous community-based work is an asset for members of the OCEC research team.

The School of Public Health integrates research, graduate education, and community engagement to improve population health. Its interdisciplinary structure includes academic programs, centres, and research teams focused on tackling pressing public health issues locally and globally. Education

  • A Master’s degree in a health or related discipline (e.g. public health, nutrition, physical education, kinesiology, psychology, knowledge translation, etc.)

Experience and Expertise

  • Minimum 3 years of experience with data coordination and/or data management
  • Familiarity with data privacy, consent frameworks, ethical data use (e.g., considerations for research and non-research use)
  • Knowledge on data platforms and usage
  • Experience curating resources and maintaining a knowledge base or website
  • Understanding of ethical guidelines and institutional regulations relating to research and funding compliance
  • Familiarity with data privacy, consent frameworks, ethical data use (e.g., considerations for research and non-research use)
  • Strong research skills (e.g., ability to develop research methods and data collection protocols, collect and analyze data and conduct quality analysis/assurance throughout the entire process)

  • Develops and coordinates submissions to conduct research with schools and school districts
  • Develops research work plan with timeline of deliverables
  • Tracks research milestones and ensures deliverables are met; institutes necessary changes to research plan when required to ensure milestones are met
  • Responsible for training and supervision of research staff (e.g., graduate research trainees, student volunteers, interns, contractors)
  • Work with Healthy Schools LINK research and community partners to inform and continuously improve research capacity
  • Develops presentations and progress/final reports based on research results
  • Presents findings of research at scientific conferences and to project interest holders
  • Effectively uses multiple, audience-specific methods of communication and information sharing for all audiences, including researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and the general public
