Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.
The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies (WGS) is a hub for feminist research, social justice studies, and engaged citizenship at the University of Alberta. It is a field of study that encourages students to ask big questions about the way that gender impacts how we think, how we live, and how we understand ourselves and others. Though the field historically focused on the lives of women, in the contemporary Women’s and Gender Studies classroom, an emphasis is placed on the ways that gender, race, class, age, sexuality, ability, and size work together.
This role supports Dr. Lana Whiskeyjack's research projects, which are focused on Indigenous knowledge, rematriation, art, and kinship-building towards cultural and language revitalization.

- Must have a PhD in a related field (Native Studies, Arts, Social Sciences) or a Master's combined with community engagement and research experience equivalent to a PhD. For example, a Master's combined with several years of community engagement experience and/or research experience that includes co-leading research projects throughout the research cycle, from designing research questions and methodology through data collection, analysis, dissemination, and knowledge translation.
- Must have extensive experience and expertise, a minimum of 5 years, in Indigenous community engagement, including working intensively with Elders and youth in cultural and ceremonial contexts.
- Must possess excellent facilitation and planning skills with the abilities to develop/conceptualize effective strategies that can respond to changing work environments and communication/collaboration needs while considering current and emerging issues in Indigenous community-engaged research, including data sovereignty.
- A demonstrated track record in research grant management.

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary range of $80,772 to $111,086.
The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
- Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, plays a lead role in the design and implementation of research, including overseeing data collection, data analysis, and summarizing data for publication and knowledge translation.
- May perform administrative/managerial duties (e.g. budget monitoring, procurement, staff supervision), in addition to research duties, in support of the Principal Investigator.
- Creates and enacts governance protocols under the direction of the PI to guide Indigenous research methodologies and Indigenous community engagement.
- Co-leads land-based gatherings under the direction of the PI, providing leadership and guidance in ceremonial contexts.
