A person in this role uses experienced judgment, analytical techniques, and knowledge of institutional systems to resolve moderately complex data and reporting problems while ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Analyzes, designs, and supports data-driven processes and reporting solutions that advance the Law School's academic, administrative, and strategic objectives.
  • Serves as a primary liaison between Law School stakeholders and Indiana University's enterprise data environment, translating complex reporting, accreditation, and ranking requirements into reliable, auditable data processes and analytical outputs.
  • Supports recurring external reporting obligations (e.g., American Bar Association, U.S. News and World Report, LSAC, LSSSE), institutional decision-making, and one-off analytical requests from faculty and staff.
  • Engages with Law School stakeholders to elicit, analyze, and document business, reporting, and analytical requirements.
  • Interprets external reporting definitions and methodologies and translate them into actionable data specifications.
  • Identifies gaps, inconsistencies, or risks in data sources and recommend appropriate solutions or mitigations.
  • Applies sound judgment and analytical reasoning to ambiguous or evolving requests.
  • Designs, produces, and validates recurring and ad hoc reports supporting accreditation, rankings, governance, and administrative decision-making.
  • Reconciles and explains discrepancies across multiple institutional and external data sources.
  • Ensures data accuracy, completeness, and methodological consistency across reporting cycles.
  • Communicates findings, assumptions, and limitations clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Works within Indiana University's enterprise data environment to access, integrate, and analyze institutional data.
  • Supports the transition from legacy, locally developed data processes to modern, supported platforms and tools.
  • Collaborates with central IT and data governance partners to ensure appropriate use of institutional systems and data assets.
  • Maintains functional understanding of data security, privacy, and access controls.
  • Serves as a trusted analytical advisor to faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Provides consultative support for one-off or exploratory analytical questions requiring interpretation rather than predefined reporting.
  • Builds effective working relationships across functional units to support shared objectives.
  • Documents data definitions, reporting methodologies, and analytical processes to support continuity and transparency.
  • Tracks work and changes using institutional project or issue management tools.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, sustainability, and clarity in reporting and data practices.

General Responsibilities

  • Provides advanced consulting for end users, department/business stakeholders, and technical teams to gather business requirements, identify optimal business intelligence (BI) data solutions, and bridge those needs with the use of business intelligence tools.
  • Builds and maintains advanced BI solutions that address the data, reporting, business analytics, predictive analytics, and forecasting needs of the department and/or school's business and educational operations.
  • Leads in identifying data sources, modeling, and integrating data necessary for the design and maintenance of standard and ad hoc reports and analyses as well as visual solutions such as dashboards; collects, integrates, and interprets/analyzes data from numerous sources, both internal and external; conducts benchmarking activities as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison between business and technology units; proactively identifies, builds, and maintains relationships with business process owners and colleagues; provides stakeholders with necessary analysis documentation for buy-in, leadership decision, and implementation.
  • Makes recommendations to leadership for improving BI-related processes and procedures; ensures and reviews technical documentation (dashboards, reports, etc.); ensures and reviews documentation of data definitions, business rules, FAQs, and similar end user materials.
  • Researches and stays up to date on the latest business intelligence trends, standards, and best practices; may contribute on committees and communities of practice to share business intelligence approaches and best practices.
  • May serve as project leader; often provides guidance to junior peers.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree preferably in computer science, mathematics, statistics, information systems or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 5 years of BI / data visualization tools, SQL engines, data reporting/analytics development, statistical analysis/interpretation of data, or related experience.

Preferred

  • Demonstrated experience in business analysis, data analysis, or institutional reporting.
  • Experience working with structured data and reporting tools.
  • Experience working in higher education or similarly complex institutional environments.
  • Familiarity with accreditation, compliance, or ranking-related reporting.
  • Experience working with enterprise data warehouses and institutional systems.
  • Strong SQL or data-querying skills.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment.
