PATHOLOGY AND LABORATORY MED (IN-PATH-IUINA)

The Division of Computational Pathology and the Research Center for Federated Learning in Medicine are seeking a Director of Research (DoR) / Senior Research Investigator to play a central role in coordinating research efforts to advance a high-impact multidisciplinary research program in imaging analytics and federated learning, focusing on applying, developing, and benchmarking artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to radiology and pathology imaging towards disease detection, diagnosis, predicting outcome and treatment response assessment. The DoR, in close partnership with the Division Director, has authority over the conduct of a research project including protocol development/adherence, human subjects, personnel management, budget oversight, organization of resources/timelines for efficient/timely progress, and publication of results. This position works directly with the Division Director, ensuring smooth collaboration and coordinating research efforts across research faculty, post-docs, graduate candidates, clinicians (pathologists/radiologists/oncologists), and supervises other project staff, while promoting reproducibility and version-controlled documented workflows with data provenance and model governance.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Serves as the liaison between the Division Director and external collaborators.
• Monitors project progress.
• Serves as the point person for intellectual property applications, invention disclosures and institutional research collaboration agreements.
• Helps with writing and coordinating large, multi-principal investigator (PI) grant proposals.
• Identifies funding opportunities and functions as the primary programmatic liaison with the funding sponsor, if a single scientific point of contact is required.
• Publishes study results as first author or co-author.
• Performs related responsibilities as required.

General Responsibilities

• Performs highly complex data collection, data analysis, data management, literature research, technical writing, and reporting in support of research project(s); performs quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis.
• Ensures quality control of data and reports findings to federal and other agencies.
• Consults with faculty researchers and research staff and provides input on research project evaluations and research project designs.
• Writes various technical reports, journal articles, and/or develops presentations to disseminate and share research findings.
• Performs various analyses to ensure quality assurance of research findings (data quality, reports, etc.).
• Represents the department with regard to related research and participates in professional development activities and programs.
• Mentors and/or provides guidance to students, faculty, or other staff working on research project(s) through training in related aspects of research techniques and analysis as needed; Provides daily oversight to less experienced staff or student researchers.
• Leading large-scale data analysis and research.

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in a related field.

Preferred

• Doctor of Engineering (EngD), Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil), or an equivalent degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Medical Image Computing, or a related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 5 years of related experiences, including working with data systems.

Preferred

• 3 years of postdoctoral experience with coordinating duties.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
