Demonstrated experience in physical metallurgy including melt processing, thermo-mechanical processing, and/or powder metallurgy
Experience in working with advanced alloys including rare earth magnet and refractory alloys
Demonstrated experience in conducting safe work by following standard operating procedures and all rules and regulations.
Experience with synthesis and processing of materials including use mid- to large-scale furnaces such as plasma melting, electron beam melting, induction melting, and sintering
Experience in gas atomization and safe handling of powders
Experience in thermo-mechanical processing of metals and alloys including rolling, forging, and extrusion
Experience with maintaining laboratory equipment and systems, in particular vacuum pumps and systems, and furnaces.
Experience in training and/or oversight of staff

The Division of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) at Ames National Laboratory is searching for a qualified laboratory Research Technologist II or III.
This position provides daily oversight of synthesis and processing equipment in the Advanced Magnet Facility and Critical Materials Refinery at Ames Laboratory. This includes being an expert user of equipment, managing laboratory spaces, as well as helping with training of users of equipment. The candidate performs day-to-day tasks on maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting on the equipment to ensure continued functional availability and performance of the equipment and facilities; trains and supports equipment users and provides oversight for laboratory hygiene and safety policies.
Additionally this position provides complex professional level scientific support of equipment and facilities; collaborates with scientific staff to develop new methods or improve current methods for metal and alloy processing; oversees maintenance and/or upgrades; collaborates with research staff in developing appropriate processing methods/conditions; writing results on methods for research supported by facilities, resulting in scientific publications; evaluates current laboratory procedures/processes; and implements new practices to maximum efficiency of the laboratory and equipment.
In addition to the above, the Ames Laboratory Research Technologist would be responsible for building a broader network of industrial, national lab, and academic partners, and supporting the laboratory strategic goals.
This position involves multiple tasks with the ability to prioritize various temporally interrelated tasks and complete them as efficiently as possible is important to success of the laboratory. The candidate must possess the ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse set of stakeholders including equipment, researchers at all levels of the organization. The ability to learn new skills and adapt to new materials and processes is important to success in this position.
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an ongoing basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Research Technologist III: Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience
