The Investment Analyst delivers consistent performance as a productive member of an investment industry team. Incumbents lead parts of the investment surveillance and new investment evaluation process autonomously and contribute valued opinions on the “how and why” identified in his/her analysis of different aspects of a company’s performance; this includes identifying industry trends that are worthy of discussion with senior team members. Work can/will result in investment actions being taken by portfolio management and/or credit leadership. As needed, the Investment Analyst will assist in the development of investment, sales and marketing strategies as well as responsibilities related to investor relations and cultivation of deal sources. Also, on an as needed basis, will be responsible for traveling to management and due diligence meetings, as well as key industry conferences and research symposia.

The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the ICED-T Team’s most senior analysts in the administration of their fixed income portfolios. Specific responsibilities will include writing annual reviews of portfolio investments, modeling financial results, reviewing company publications and third- party research, and meeting with management teams and sell side professionals. The analyst may also be responsible for independently administering an investment portfolio, as well as making investment recommendations, with the size and complexity of the analyst’s portfolio subject to the specific background and development of the analyst. The successful candidate must demonstrate an ability to perform the following functions or the capacity to attain proficiency in them after entering the position.

Investment Administration

  • Identify and analyze company-specific and industry-wide investment risks.

  • Develop a framework for developing credit ratings and rating tolerances.

  • Translate investment risks into a credit rating.

  • Become familiar with deal specific and industry standard documentation.

  • Attend management presentations and actively participate in discussions on company strategy and performance where appropriate.

  • Interface and build relationships with sell side and third party research analysts.

  • Prepare comprehensive written reviews of individual investments.

  • Communicate changes in investment risk across the investment team and broader investment management complex on a timely basis.

New Investment Opportunities

  • Contribute to efforts in researching markets, companies and industries for identifying new investment opportunities.

  • Contribute to and participate in a due diligence process that includes meeting with issuer management, company site visits and the development of documentation.

  • Contribute to the preparation of investment memoranda in support of investment recommendations.

  • Interface with Credit, Trading and Portfolio Management for your portfolio companies, serve as a backup analyst in the absence of a primary analysts.

Corporate Outreach

  • Attend and represent MFC/JH at conferences, roadshows and management meetings.

  • Contribute to associate analysts and intern recruitment efforts.

  • Contribute to direct marketing efforts through research, materials development and analysis.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree.

  • Well developed quantitative and qualitative analytical skills.

  • Highly developed written and verbal presentation skills.

  • Competency in office software.

  • Up to five years of relevant experience.

  • Pursuing or planning to pursue the CFA designation or an MBA.

Salary range is expected to be between

$86,500.00 CAD - $130,000.00 CAD
