We are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the Research and Exploratory Development Department Managing Executive (ME), a key member of the REDD Executive Leadership Team (ELT), with direct line management responsibility for the Department.
As the Research and Exploratory Development Department’s Managing Executive, you will…
- Lead and empower REDD’s technical staff to carry out REDD’s vision of accelerating transformative innovation by driving strategic workforce planning, ensuring high-quality talent, creating robust leadership succession pipelines, and sustaining capability growth.
- Develop, mentor and inspire staff within REDD and across APL, fostering an environment of excellence, technical innovation, collaboration, variety of perspectives, and continual improvement.
- Possess the ability to drive clarity, set expectations, establish objective metrics, and hold individuals and teams accountable with care and respect.
- Recognize and celebrate achievements across all levels, fostering pride, motivation, and a shared commitment to REDD’s mission.
- As a member of the REDD Executive Leadership Team (ELT), proactively contribute in developing and translating REDD’s vision into action by aligning strategy with execution to deliver critical contributions to critical challenges.
- Serve as a member of the Laboratory’s Executive Leadership Team to champion cross-organizational collaboration that drives execution, breaks down silos, and model transparent communication across the Lab.
Qualifications
You meet our minimum requirements if you have…
- A Master’s degree in engineering, physical sciences, mathematics, computer science or a related technical discipline
- A minimum of 15 years of relevant professional experience, to include APL leadership experience at the Branch Supervisor level or higher
- Demonstrated record of strong leadership success in dynamic environments
- Proven success in the development and sustainability of organizational strategy
- A highly collaborative work style with skill in building relationships with executive peers and employees at all levels
- Illustrate critical leadership and personal attributes including: unquestionable integrity, visionary with strategic perspective, inspirational, collaborative, and results-oriented
- Experience managing budgets and allocating resources across a large and dynamic organization
- The ability to obtain a top-secret level clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI. If selected, you will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. Citizenship

The referenced pay range is based on JHU APL’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as geographic location, work experience, market conditions, education/training and skill level with consideration for internal parity. For salaried employees scheduled to work less than 40 hours per week, annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked. APL may offer bonuses or other forms of compensation per internal policy and/or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be provided in the form of a sign-on bonus, relocation benefits, locality allowance or discretionary payments for exceptional performance. APL provides eligible staff with a comprehensive benefits package including retirement plans, paid time off, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, flexible spending accounts, education assistance, and training and development.
