The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Specialist to perform a range of assays and experiments working mostly independently, utilizing a good understanding of the work of the laboratory. The Research Specialist will be responsible for conducting independent research experiments with minimal supervision from faculty or senior staff personnel in the laboratory.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Modifying and conducting experiments, analyzing the results, and proposing appropriate follow up experiments.
  • Stay current with the literature to be aware of the background of current research as well as new developments and interpret how they impact future plans.
  • Use excellent communication skills to present results at lab meetings.
  • Optimize established techniques and protocols as needed.
  • Assist laboratory manager with laboratory upkeep including equipment maintenance, inventory status, and resource management.
  • Train junior laboratory personnel such as undergraduate students and research technologists.
  • Assist with the processing of specimens from the laboratories' sizeable clinical studies as well as maintaining the laboratories’ sizeable animal colony.
  • Make sound experimental decisions based on scientific understanding of techniques.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • One year of laboratory experience performing relevant techniques. e.g. animal husbandry and dissection, cell culture and aseptic technique, western blot, PCR, flow cytometry, and human specimen processing.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
