We are seeking a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) who will assist in ensuring the smooth and effective execution of research conducted in the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR) adult Outpatient Department (OPD). The LPN will provide skilled nursing support for clinical procedures in accordance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and established Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) Standard of Care, JHU Policy, and ICTR Guidelines. The LPN will work as a team member and independently as directed by the Research Nurse Manager.

Specific duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for accurate research data collection and recording as requested.
  • Serve as Charge Nurse in the absence of the Research Nurse Manager and the SR Research Nurse.
  • Prepare patients for examination.
  • Identify patients with special needs and provide appropriate assistance.
  • Obtain and record the patient's vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, weight, height, and oxygen saturation, and perform EKGs.
  • Perform phlebotomy and provide complete coverage as needed.
  • Process lab samples in accordance with the study protocol’s lab manual.
  • Administer oral, intramuscular (IM), and subcutaneous (Subq) medications.
  • Insert IVs, administer infusions, and collect blood samples.
  • Administer infusions and obtain blood samples from PICCS and Ports.
  • Perform DXA scans as needed.
  • Travel to JHU and JHH inpatient and outpatient units to conduct Scatter Nursing visits, blood draws, sample processing, questionnaires, and any other study-related activities within the LPN scope of practice, and Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
  • Perform Point of Care (POC) glucose, urine dipstick, and pregnancy test, and daily and weekly quality control (QC).
  • Conduct study-related procedures for patients with COVID, utilizing the negative pressure room while following established isolation procedures. Maintain the Negative Pressure room in accordance with Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control (HEIC) Guidelines.
  • Conduct study-related procedures for participants with infectious Diseases.

Other duties as assigned include, but are not limited to

  • Answer phones and provide routine information to callers, offer friendly, courteous assistance to every patient to ensure that the patient has a positive, professional experience while at the ICTR.
  • Provide front desk coverage in the absence of CMA staff, schedule appointments and register patients using EPIC, CRU-Online.
  • Utilize JHU iLab to enter the patient’s visit charges.
  • Order, stock, and maintain exam rooms and clinic standard supplies.
  • Ensure that soiled linen, needle containers, and potentially infectious waste are appropriately disposed of and removed from the clinic and exam area according to the infection control guidelines.

  • Effective verbal communication and interpersonal skills with patients, physicians, or other healthcare team members.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Must understand the importance and impact of data integrity in terms of patients, study results, costs, quality of service, and scientific research in general.
  • Requires a willingness to learn specific study-related procedures and study-specific equipment as required for accurate data collection.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to work with populations across ages, sexual orientations, and socio-economic circumstances.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to follow guidelines as established by research study protocols.
  • Administers first aid, CPR, and maintains emergency equipment and supplies.

Staff Education

  • Participates in the orientation process for new OPD staff.
  • Attends and participates in in-service and external training and other relevant professional growth and development programs.
  • Assist in training new employees, externs, and coordinators in clinical skills to ensure their proficiency.
  • Obtain and maintain Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Human Subjects Research (HSR), and study-specific training.

Quality Assurance

  • Perform daily and weekly QA, for POC pregnancy test, urine dip stick, and glucometer as required by JHH, JHU and OPD ICTR.
  • Obtain and maintain the required certification for QA.
  • Participates in sponsor/cooperative group/internal audits/monitoring.
  • Maintains confidentiality of correspondence of faxes, e-mails, etc.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing with licensure as an LPN.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an outpatient clinic or hospital setting.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR certification required.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certifications during the duration of employment.
  • Acceptable completion of the JHH credential process is required within two weeks of the start date.
  • Proficient in IV inserts, infusion and phlebotomy.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in clinical research in an academic, government, or pharmaceutical industry environment.
