We are seeking a Research Technologist who will work on a multidisciplinary team in the lab of Dr. Joel Sunshine developing degradable nanoparticle systems for gene delivery and immunotherapy. Responsibilities will include lab management, running assays, formulation development, particle analysis, animal studies, and data analysis. Animal studies will be a major component of the duties; experience with rodent handling and analysis of animal samples is highly desirable. This position will monitor adherence to JHU and departmental and animal use and care policies and procedures. The position will also provide technical assistance to research study staff on laboratory operations with a high level of independence.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following common protocols independently or with instructions.
  • Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques and methods of the lab.
  • Gain problem-solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
  • Run lab tests and complete measurements.
  • Identify and resolve common problems involved in routine assays.
  • Increase skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.
  • Train users in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques and procedures.
  • Set-up experiments based on defined standards.
  • Collect project data.
  • Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
  • Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitor inventory of supplies, clean equipment.

In addition to the duties described above

  • Ordering lab supplies, reagents, and materials for all experiments; maintaining inventory counts.
  • Maintaining mouse colonies (establishing breeder pairs, weaning mice, performing weekly inspections).
  • Assisting with in vivo studies (mouse flank tumor implantations, intratumoral nanoparticle injections, tumor/spleen/lymph node/blood harvests, processing tissues for flow cytometry).
  • Assisting with in vitro studies (passaging cell culture lines, plating tumor cells, preparing nanoparticles).
  • Assisting with molecular biology techniques (ELISAs, Western blots, gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry).
  • Setting up and maintaining central laboratory computer.
  • Point person contact for laboratory inspections, IT service requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in one or more of the following technical areas: drug delivery, gene therapy, materials, chemistry, nanotechnology, oncology, or immunology.
  • Experience with mouse handling.
  • Two plus years’ experience in a biomedical engineering lab.
