What You Will Do

The Mechanical Design Engineering (MDE) group of the Accelerator Operations Technology (AOT) division is seeking a strongly self-motivated Accelerator Water Technician (Engineered Systems Tec 3) to be a member of the LANSCE Water Systems Team. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of cooling water system components like pumps, piping, valves, heat exchangers, chillers, and instrumentation.

The candidate will provide demonstrated experience working on accelerator water systems, including finding and repairing leaks; identifying, purchasing, and maintaining an inventory of spare parts; planning and preparing for future work; following instructions closely and calling supervisor when unsure about something; working closely with team members and personnel from outside the team or group; staying highly productive while prioritizing safety of self and others.

This position involves on-call duties where one must be available 24 hours per day for a week on a rotational basis, to support LANSCE beam operations. Call-ins can be at any time of the night and will be paid hours. Occasional overtime will be required for urgently needed work.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

The successful candidate shall have demonstrated skills in the following areas:

  • Experience or familiarity with assembling, maintaining, and operating industrial cooling water systems and their associated equipment such as pumps, valves, piping, heat exchangers, filters, chillers, and the instrumentation used for these systems, which may be radiologically activated.
  • Experience or familiarity with flanged and welded piping systems; and soldered, brazed, welded, and fitting-joined tubing assemblies; and the associated system construction techniques.
  • Experience with precision control of RF cavity resonance with cooling water temperature modulation.
  • Demonstrated experience with the design and fabrication of custom devices for maintaining water systems such as cooling passage flushing cart, pressure test station.
  • Ability to plan and execute maintenance tasks during brief periods of access when the pressure to resume operations is intense and visibility is high.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with all manner of hand tools like wrenches, sockets, screw drivers, and pliers, and small power tools like drills, grinders, impact drivers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively as a part of a team.
  • Basic experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word and Outlook).
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and communicate effectively with scientists, engineers, and technicians.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Position require an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. Training/experience/education preferably in plumbing, pipefitting, fluid systems, or other similar occupations.

Desired Qualifications:

Additional skills that would be considered beneficial to a candidate but not required are listed below:

  • Experience operating de-ionized water systems and their associated equipment.
  • Experience rebuilding industrial water pumps.
  • Formal training or certification as a pipefitter.
  • Possess a brazing and/or welding certification or the ability to certify.
  • Experience working in radiation areas and with potentially irradiated systems and equipment to include the use of respirators.
  • Experience with basic wiring, fabrication, welding and machining practices and techniques.
  • Experience with forklift and crane operations.
  • Q cleared or the ability to become Q cleared.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
