As a Battery System Engineer at Meta, you will take ownership of the Battery pack electrical designs and their integrations to power the amazing devices developed by Reality Labs. You will work closely with product engineering teams to define battery requirements, aiming to find the best options for product volume, weight, and run time. You will provide build support during New Product Introduction activities to ensure that manufacturing processes align with design intent. Collaboration with safety, reliability, operations, software and other cross-functional partners will be essential to integrate the battery into the final system and meet system level performance metrics. Supporting final assembly activities at supplier sites to ensure proper integration of the battery into the final system will be part of your duties, as well as assisting the sourcing team with cost analysis, supplier audits, and market analysis.
Battery System Engineer Responsibilities
  • Works with product groups to define and deliver battery packs as per product requirements
  • Works with vendors to develop battery packs per Meta’s requirements
  • Develop engineering requirements specifications, test and validation plans for manufacturing and characterizing battery packs
  • Develop Electrical and interconnect architectures for battery management systems
  • Develop test boards, test fixtures to validate the performance of batteries
  • Develop processes, frameworks and best practices to scale designs across multiple programs
  • Develop Electrical and thermal battery characterization requirements
  • Support hardware integration related to interfacing hardware and connection issues
  • Provide build support during early NPI builds to ensure that the process can meet the design intent
  • Rigorous failure analysis, root cause analysis, corrective action and communication to the cross functional teams on issues
  • Identify system interactions and design factors which impact battery module performance such as charge time affected by system thermals and battery age, interaction with accessories and help assist product claims on battery runtimes
  • Battery gas gauge performance characterization at both module and system level
  • Support SW integration of batteries in system for both functionality and performance
  • Domestic and/or international travel to suppliers in Asia and test labs in US
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent industry experience
  • 4+ years experience in working with of Li-ion battery pack design
  • Experience with Battery Management systems including fuel gauging
  • Proven knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals
  • Prior experience working on consumer electronics
  • PCB schematic capture and layout design with Altium
  • Experience communicating with and working collaboratively with Product Design engineers and other hardware/software cross-functional functions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S / MS in Electrical Engineering
  • 5+ years experience in working with Li-ion battery pack design
  • Good understanding of battery protection circuits, communication protocols such as I2C, UART, charger interactions
  • Professional Electrical Engineering background in analog and digital circuits, schematic and layout capture tools
  • Familiarity with statistical tools, DOEs and packages such as JMP / Minitab
  • Experience programming in languages like Python or C and/or other scripting languages
  • Experience with high volume production
  • Good interpersonal skills and feasible to work effectively in a dynamic team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to read and write.
