As a Safety and Compliance Engineer at Meta's Reality Labs (RL), you will be responsible for developing and implementing Product Safety, Hazard analysis, and compliance strategies for all Meta hardware products This role will aid in the assessment of product safety issues through design analysis, traceability and incorporating lessons learned from previous product development cycles. This engineering role will identify and resolve safety issues that are above and beyond the requirements in published UL, IEC or IEEE standards. This role will interface with various design teams and provide input on critical safety product design. You will interact closely with cross-functional teams including Hardware Engineering, Product Design, Quality, Reliability and Operations. This role serves as a key point of contact within hardware and compliance teams ensuring safe product design and ongoing safety for Meta's customers.
Device Safety and Compliance Engineer Responsibilities
  • Contribute to product design reviews and identify safety hazards and compliance issues. Work with the cross-functional team to ensure issues are resolved
  • Integrate safety and compliance into product design, development, and testing processes
  • Communicate compliance objectives, identify test/schedule issues, and update cross-functional teams
  • Manage the DFMEA process to ensure early identification, design changes, and testing are done to account for hazards, meet all safety compliance requirements, and that documentation is complete and accurate
  • Guide product development teams on design for safety and ensure products meet all applicable internal safety specifications and processes
  • Translate product safety requirements into design requirements for R&D engineers and provide product safety technical guidance
  • Lead and contribute to product safety event investigations and ensure root cause analysis and corrective action plans are implemented in accordance with the product safety process
  • Review, approve, or modify changes to products, processes, and documentation that could impact product safety
  • Maintain knowledge and application of product safety regulations, standards, requirements, and certifications that apply to AR/VR/MR/Wearable products
  • Review emerging regulations and changing design standards for potential impacts. Propose compliance plans to meet changing requirements
  • Obtain safety compliance type approvals for product lines to ensure entry into domestic and international locations and markets
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • BS/MS Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, or Optical)
  • 5+ years of work in consumer electronics product safety
  • Working knowledge of product safety and optical illumination hazards and evaluation according to IEC 60825-1, IEC62471, IEC62368
  • Working knowledge of hazard analysis and risk assessment methodologies and processes like DFMEA and FTA
  • Knowledge of Li-ion battery design, safety, certification and failure analysis
  • Experience with worldwide certification planning and execution
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in safety investigations, either during development process or failure analysis

$139,000/year to $200,000/year + bonus + equity + benefits

Individual compensation is determined by skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Compensation details listed in this posting reflect the base hourly rate, monthly rate, or annual salary only, and do not include bonus, equity or sales incentives, if applicable.
