Overview

Core Services Safe Releases and Sovereign Clouds team in Microsoft Teams provides the Build and Release infrastructure, Safe Change Observability & Enforcement, Sovereign Clouds Buildout Automation and Orchestration to run planet scale distributed systems and microservices architecture that powers Microsoft Teams. Eliminating change related outages and engineering toil when building and running microservices are at the heart of what this team aspires to do day in and day out.


As a Principal Software Engineer Manager in Teams Core Services Safe Releases and Sovereign Clouds team you will be responsible for the Infra as Code automation, build and release pipelines, predictable releases, observability, change insights, and Sovereign cloud buildout for the microservices powering Microsoft Teams. This opportunity will allow you to hone your skills in defining, measuring and enforcing Safe change at every level for every type of change for a dial tone product like Microsoft Teams lowering blast radius of change related outages dramatically, and adopt Infra as Code to every part of the buildout and operations lifecycle of services improving both organizational efficiency and lowering engineering toil.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years people management experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience leading cross-functional collaboration across multiple engineering organizations with solid incident response and ability to drive technical decisions in ambiguous environments.
  • Experience with Infra as Code, Build and Release Pipelines, Test Infrastructure.
  • Experience defining and enforcing policies across a broad range of services/teams.
  • Knowledge of automation technologies, leveraging AI for productivity improvements, methods, and processes used for quality and cost improvements.
  • Experience managing horizontal initiatives/programs that span multiple teams/services.
Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee partnership with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project manager, technical lead) to determine user requirements within and across teams for multiple solutions or product lines.
  • Oversee and coaches teams and provides technical leadership for identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
  • Optimize, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
  • Oversee teams to drive multiple group's project plans, release plans, and work items in coordination with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) across products.
  • Lead the resolution of complex site incidents and oversees for Designated Responsible Individuals (DRI) and directs the work of other engineers across product lines.
  • Keep informed of and communicates new safe change policies and enforcement standards to ensure that the service development applies best practices and holds accountability for services that do not meet expectations.
