Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core data center infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year data center construction and lease projects. We are seeking a seasoned Electrical Power Systems Engineer with significant experience in high-voltage substation design, power distribution, and grid integration. This role is critical in supporting the delivery of complex infrastructure projects across the EU, ensuring technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and seamless coordination with transmission system operators (TSOs). The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, leadership in design and commissioning, and a strong understanding of EU grid codes and legislation.



Responsibilities
  • Lead and review the design of high-voltage substations and offsite distribution systems.
  • Ensure compliance with EU grid codes and national transmission operator requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance to specialist Design & Build contractors.
  • Conduct and validate power system studies including:
    • Load flow
    • Short circuit
    • Harmonic analysis
    • Transient stability
    • Dynamic and static modelling
  • Develop and implement active/reactive power control strategies.
  • Oversee detailed design, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Interface directly with TSOs and regulatory bodies to ensure grid code compliance.
  • Support project teams with technical documentation, risk assessments, and design reviews.
  • Stay current with evolving EU legislation and standards related to power systems.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Significant experience in:
    • Substation design (HV/MV)
    • Offsite power distribution
    • Power quality and control systems
    • Grid integration and compliance
  • Proven experience in:
    • Detailed design and engineering
    • Construction and commissioning of power systems
    • Working with TSOs and regulatory authorities
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • EU grid codes and compliance processes
    • Power system modelling tools (e.g., DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, ETAP)
    • Active/reactive power control and power quality standards
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead technical discussions and resolve complex engineering challenges.

While not required, we also look for the following Preferred Qualifications:

  • Chartered Engineer status or equivalent professional accreditation.
  • Experience in renewable energy integration and hybrid systems.
  • Familiarity with digital substations and IEC 61850 standards.
  • Multinational project experience across the EU.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
