Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

The ideal candidate will have experience in a team environment, deep geotechnical technical knowledge, and experience in earthworks & site development, utilities, foundations and infrastructure design. The ideal candidate can also support the civils design. In addition, this position requires an individual who can demonstrate the ability to ensure highly resilient and scalable service designs through partnership with other members of the service team.

Responsibilities

The Datacenter Senior Geotechnical / Civil Engineering SME will:

  • Provide leadership and coordinated direction for geotecnical engineering works as it pertains to the development of datacenters sites.
  • Geotechnical design support for projects at Site Due Diligence, Site Masterplanning and throughout Detailed Design through construction to handover.
  • This role will require collaboration with Global Technical Excellence team, Global Strategy teams and DCD Construction Team to develop the datacenter designs from basis of design (BOD) to issue for constructions (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of datacenter until handover.
  • To be successful in this role the candidate will collaborate with internal & external customers, direct the Geotechnical and Civils technical delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete Datacenter design solutions aligned with the scopes, schedules and budgets of the projects.
  • Direct geotechncial solutions in conjunction with civils & structural design, keeping cost, construction schedule and construcability to the fore on every project.
  • Give technical direction to our vendors who include professional geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and professional structural engineers.
  • Collaborate with the Site Selection, Site Due Diliogence, Construction, external Design teams and external stakeholders to develop data center (DC) designs, starting from project conception to issue for construction (IFC) for new DC projects build outs and major infrastructure upgrades.
  • The SME may also work on the lease portfolio, AI design, retrofits and upgrades of existing facilities.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Geotechnical Engineering. Civil or Structural Degree may be considered with excellent knowledge of Geotechnical
  • Professional Geotechnical Engineer or Registered/Chartered Engineer or working towards registration, with deep understanidng of Eurcodes EC7
  • Noteworthy experience as Geotechnical Engineer, with 5 years in a Senior Lead role.
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of underground earthworks and geotechnical engineering, utilities, roads & carparks, experience of detailed co-ordination with all other disciplines Structural/Architectural/M&E/Telecoms.
  • Demonstrated understanding of interface between design cost, schedule and constructability
  • Ability to navigate in 3D Models, eg BIM360/Navisworks/Revit/Civils 3D
  • Ability to lead and contribute to site master planning
  • Good understanding of construction techniques, sequencing, and site logistics
  • Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Significant experience in mission critical project or large infrastructure projects (Datacenters, Laboratories and/or strategic infrastructure projects or similar)
  • Demonstrated ability to write, speak, and present information effectively and persuasively in English
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to lead and be proactive
  • Excellent problem-solving, judgment, team building, and decision-making skills
  • Experience using MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project, Visio, and Excel including effective reporting/presentations of project information

Preffered Qualifications:

  • Excellent Knowledge of Geotechnical Engineering and applications in various envirnments and regions
  • Leading Geotechnical/Civil Engineering Teams

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
