Overview

Join Microsoft AI (MAI), the team behind Copilot, Bing, MSN, Microsoft Advertising, and Edge, as we build the next generation of intelligent mobile experiences. We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer with deep expertise in iOS development to lead the evolution of our mobile foundations. In this role, you will architect, harden, and optimize the core layers of our mobile applications—frameworks, infrastructure, performance pipelines, and reliability systems—that power Copilot and our broader ecosystem across millions of devices.

This position is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of platform engineering, system design, performance optimization, and long-term architectural thinking. You will shape the technical backbone that enables product teams to move faster, ship safer, and innovate with confidence. If you enjoy building durable foundations, eliminating systemic risks, and raising the quality bar for mobile engineering, you’ll feel right at home on our team.

MAI operates with the agility of a startup—fast-paced, iterative, and impact-driven—while backed by Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and organization on the planet to achieve more. We value engineers who take initiative, navigate ambiguity with clarity, and continuously push the boundaries of what mobile platforms can achieve.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.

Responsibilities
  • Drive the architecture, technical design, and evolution of mobile foundational layers.
  • Strengthen the core quality and reliability of the app, building guardrails, diagnostics, and automated protections that prevent regressions and ensure consistent performance at scale.
  • Drive optimizations across the app, using deep platform knowledge to identify systemic bottlenecks and implement durable improvements.
  • Partner closely with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Research, Backend, AI) to translate complex requirements into robust, scalable client-side solutions.
  • Explore and integrate AI-assisted development workflows to improve code quality, reduce iteration time, and enhance developer productivity across the mobile organization.
  • Own critical incident response and long-term remediation, ensuring the app remains stable, observable, and resilient under real-world conditions.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in iOS development using Swift and/or Objective‑C, with strong understanding of iOS frameworks, system behaviors, and performance characteristics.
  • Proven experience building and maintaining large-scale, high-quality mobile applications with complex architecture and long-term maintainability requirements.
  • Solid understanding of mobile system design, including modularization, dependency management, concurrency, memory management, and networking.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve deep technical issues across performance, stability, and reliability dimensions.
  • A growth mindset and willingness to adopt new tools, technologies, and AI-assisted engineering workflows.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years of relevant engineering experience.
  • Experience designing mobile foundations or platform-level components (e.g., shared frameworks, internal SDKs, architecture patterns).
  • Expertise in performance profiling, crash/ANR root-cause analysis, startup optimization, memory tuning.
  • Experience with cross-platform client engineering (Android, React Native, Flutter, or shared C++ layers) is a plus.
  • Solid communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence engineering direction across multiple teams.

This position will be open for a minimum of 5 days, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis until the position is filled.
