As an Applied & Data Scientist in the IC3 Data Science team, you will help shape the future of intelligent communications by developing scalable ML, AI, and LLM solutions that directly impact billions of users worldwide. Your work will drive innovation and deliver measurable improvements in product quality, reliability, and user experience. This role requires close collaboration with Product Management and Data Engineering teams to understand underlying telemetry data and metrics, enabling data‑driven insights that inform product decisions and business impact, while also partnering with product teams to integrate advanced algorithms and models into globally deployed products, ensuring solutions are robust, reliable, and deliver reliable user experiences.
You will train, tune, and evaluate models based on customer feedback and requirements, applying rigorous frameworks to measure and improve product quality, performance, and impact. Your work will directly contribute to the evolution of Microsoft’s communications platforms, empowering billions of users to connect and collaborate securely and effectively.
Responsibilities
- Acquire and prepare data by building project plans, developing usable datasets for modeling, and updating best practices for data collection, preparation, and data integrity.
- Evaluate and improve models by reviewing team modeling approaches, recommending enhancements, conducting analysis of modeling techniques, and identifying new evaluation methods.
- Develop scalable solutions by building operational models, writing extensible code, applying strong debugging practices, and ensuring solutions are robust, reliable, and production‑ready.
- Drive strategy and innovation through deep knowledge of industry trends and technologies, defining business and customer solution goals, and identifying new strategic opportunities with partner teams.
- Apply a customer‑focused approach by training and evaluating models based on customer needs, incorporating feedback frameworks, and ensuring solutions deliver relevant, impactful outcomes.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field
- OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) or consulting experience
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 2+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR equivalent experience.
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

- OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
- OR equivalent experience.
- 2+ years' experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, programming languages including Python, machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch (including LLMs), and data querying tools such as SQL and Kusto.
- Familiarity with MLOps, model deployment, and monitoring in production environments is a plus.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly master new technologies, tools, and domains.
- Comfortable operating in a dynamic environment, taking initiative to bring clarity and momentum while remaining self‑motivated, outcomes‑focused, and demonstrating ownership and accountability.
Data Science IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
