Overview

We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join the Microsoft Copilot team and help shape the next generation of AI-powered experiences across devices and surfaces.

In this role, you will work at the intersection of product, data science, and engineering to define success metrics, design rigorous experiments, build scalable analytics frameworks, and generate actionable insights that improve user experience, product quality, and business outcomes. You will partner closely with Product Managers, Engineers, Designers, and cross-functional stakeholders to drive data-informed decisions from concept to launch.

As part of Microsoft AI, you will contribute to building intelligent and trustworthy Copilot experiences that are measurable, explainable, and continuously improving at scale.

Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. This expectation is subject to local law and may vary by jurisdiction.

Responsibilities
  • Define and evolve product health metrics for Copilot experiences (e.g., quality, engagement, retention, latency, reliability, and task success).
  • Design and execute A/B tests and quasi-experimental analyses to evaluate feature impact and guide roadmap prioritization.
  • Build robust causal inference and statistical analysis frameworks to distinguish correlation from impact.
  • Develop scalable data pipelines, monitoring dashboards, and self-service analytics to enable fast, high-quality decision making.
  • Diagnose product and model performance issues through deep-dive analyses; identify root causes and propose actionable solutions.
  • Partner with Engineering to improve telemetry quality, experiment instrumentation, and measurement coverage.
  • Collaborate with Product and Design to translate ambiguous product questions into measurable hypotheses and clear success criteria.
  • Communicate insights and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Drive best practices in data quality, reproducibility, and responsible experimentation.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 3+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience applying data science/analytics to solve complex product or business problems.
  • Solid hands-on skills in Python and SQL; experience with large-scale data processing and analytical workflows.
  • Solid foundation in statistical modeling, experimentation design, hypothesis testing, and causal inference.
  • Experience building metrics systems, dashboards, and decision frameworks for product development.
  • Solid problem-solving skills and the ability to drive end-to-end analytical projects with high ownership.
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and verbal), with the ability to influence cross-functional partners.
  • This role requires effective collaboration across regions and time zones.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and ambiguous problem spaces.
  • Commitment to high standards in data quality, privacy, and responsible AI practices.

Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 3+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 7+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in AI product analytics, conversational AI, LLM evaluation, ranking/retrieval systems, or recommendation/search systems.
  • Familiarity with Copilot-like interaction data and quality frameworks (e.g., grounding quality, response usefulness, task completion).
  • Experience with cloud and big data platforms (Azure preferred), including production-scale telemetry and monitoring.
  • Track record of influencing product strategy through rigorous experimentation and measurable business impact.
  • Ability to mentor peers and raise the data-science bar within a cross-functional product team.
