Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.
The Azure SQL DB Connectivity team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join us on our mission to build and operate the critical front door to Azure SQL Database. Our team stands at the intersection of scale, performance, and innovation, serving as the gateway through which millions of applications and users securely and reliably connect to Azure SQL DB services around the globe. We are responsible for delivering world-class network connectivity, enabling seamless access for customers ranging from startups to Fortune 500 enterprises.
What sets our sub-team apart within the Azure Databases product pillar is our relentless focus on connection scale, reliability, and performance. The Connectivity team serves as the backbone of Azure SQL DB’s global reach, handling vast volumes of simultaneous connections and orchestrating the experience that initiates every customer interaction with the database service. We innovate in reducing network latency, increasing throughput, and enhancing the security of connections, ensuring our customers experience the fastest and most dependable service possible. As a Senior Software Engineer in the Azure SQL DB Connectivity team, you will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing solutions that push the boundaries of distributed systems, high-throughput networking, and cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design, implementation, and maintenance of reliable and scalable connectivity solutions that serve as the entry point for Azure SQL DB customers worldwide.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance network throughput, reduce latency, and strengthen security for millions of concurrent connections to the Azure SQL DB service.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve customer experience by optimizing connection management, load balancing, and fault tolerance within the connectivity layer.
- Participate in the full software development lifecycle, including prototyping, development, testing, deployment, and operational support for connectivity services in both staging and production environments.
- Apply engineering best practices to ensure the long-term health, performance, and reliability of connectivity infrastructure, aligning with the group's strategic objectives and Microsoft's vision for global cloud services.

Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
Other Qualifications
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
- This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred/Additional Qualifications
- 4+ years of hands-on coding experience shipping products across multiple release cycles.
- Master’s degree in Systems, Computer Science.
- Proficiency with C/C++.
- Working knowledge of operating systems concepts (scheduling, caching, memory management).
- Extensive and specialized knowledge in one or more of the following areas: OS/Database internals, Hardware knowledge (CPU/System/Networking), and Cloud related technologies.
- Experience with at-scale distributed systems.
- Prior experience in Cloud service offering.
- Design and implementation skills.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
