Principal Software Engineer
Microsoft
Mission
The Growth Engineering team’s mission is to drive sustained usage and revenue growth by building platformlevel campaign intelligence, governance, and personalization systems. We enable growth teams to move from guesswork to action by delivering highquality data, deep diagnostics, and flexible campaign management across the full campaign lifecycle.
The team owns the core technology (Iris) for campaign insights, campaign governance, experimentation, and growth decisioning. Our platforms power Iris Insights, Iris campaign management, campaign performance and governance capabilities that balance growth velocity with customer experience at scale.
Opportunity
This is an opportunity to lead a foundational, highimpact engineering team within the larger Growth organization. As a Principal Engineering Manager, you will operate at the intersection of growth strategy, platform architecture, data systems, and governance.
You will build and evolve scalable growth intelligence platforms that serve multiple personas—Growth PMs, Campaign Owners, Governance Admins, and Leadership—while solving some of the most complex problems in digital marketing, including:
Campaign competition and prioritization
Message fatigue and frequency governance
Actionable, systemlevel growth optimization
You will be empowered to make productwide technical and architectural decisions that directly impact flagship growth motions across surfaces, channels, and geographies.
Responsibilities
Technical & Platform Leadership
Lead a team of fullstack engineers building growth intelligence and campaign management platforms that influence usage, engagement, and revenue across IDEAs.
Own the endtoend technical architecture for campaign insights, diagnostics, and governance systems—spanning data ingestion, aggregation, analytics, and product experiences.
Drive high engineering quality through architecture reviews, design reviews, and code reviews, ensuring systems are scalable, reliable, and performant.
Growth & Insights Enablement
Build platforms that provide clear, actionable visibility into campaign performance, from eligibility and selection through delivery, engagement, and conversion.
Enable selfserve diagnostics and insights that help partners understand why campaigns perform the way they do and what to change.
Partner closely with product management and data analysts to translate growth questions into durable platform capabilities, not oneoff analyses.
Governance & Customer Experience
Design and evolve platformlevel mechanisms that protect customer experience while enabling growth.
Ensure systems provide crosscampaign and crosssurface visibility, preventing local optimization from harming global outcomes.
Execution & Collaboration
Own feature execution and rollout plans, working closely with PMs, analysts, and partner engineering teams.
Collaborate with engineering peers across orgs and geographies to reuse shared components, data models, and infrastructure.
Influence orgwide technical direction and contribute to shared platform standards.
People & Culture
Mentor and grow senior engineers and EMs, raising the technical and leadership bar across the team.
Foster a culture of ownership, systems thinking, and growth mindset.
Drive orglevel initiatives that improve execution rigor, engineering excellence, and collaboration.
Qualifications
14+ years of handson product development experience.
5+ years of experience leading engineering teams (up to ~10 engineers), including senior engineers.
Proven experience delivering largescale, crossteam platforms with measurable business impact.
Technical Depth
Strong understanding of backend and frontend (web) systems.
Experience designing and operating dataintensive systems, including analytics pipelines, aggregations, and reporting layers.
Big data experience (preferred), especially in systems that support experimentation, funnels, and attribution.
Ability to make sound architectural decisions balancing scale, performance, and extensibility.
Domain & Leadership
Familiarity with digital marketing, growth platforms, or experimentation systems is a strong plus.
Strong problemsolving skills with the ability to think systemically and strategically, not just featurebyfeature.
Track record of delivering results through influence, collaboration, and technical leadership.
Experience working across teams, orgs, and geographies.
Why This Role Matters
Your work will directly shape how growth decisions are made at scale—not just measuring outcomes, but improving them. You’ll help ensure that growth is intentional, governed, and customerfirst, while still moving fast.
This role is ideal for a leader who wants to:
Build platforms, not just features
Influence strategy through technology
Solve messy, highimpact growth problems
See tangible business outcomes from their work
