Overview

The Surface Post Launch Engineering Team is the team responsible for the quality and customer experience on all Surface products in the market, Surface launches great products and this team is the one responsible for these products getting better over time, this includes features, improvements to performance and reliability, security and compliance and more.

We’re looking for an early career Software Engineer who’s excited to learn how modern PC systems are built and shipped at scale. In this role, you’ll grow your skills while helping deliver high quality software used in high volume consumer products.

You’ll work on software across different layers of the system—starting with well scoped tasks and gradually taking on more ownership as you gain experience. Along the way, you’ll learn from experienced engineers and collaborate closely with teammates across hardware, systems, and software disciplines.

What you’ll learn and work on

  • Write, improve, and maintain software features with guidance from senior engineers
  • Debug and fix issues, learning how to diagnose problems efficiently and thoughtfully
  • Build and improve automated tests to help ensure software quality
  • Learn how software integrates with hardware and system components
  • Use modern tools, including AI assisted development tools, to improve code quality, speed, and confidence

Collaboration and teamwork

  • Work alongside electrical engineers, system engineers, architects, and other software engineers
  • Participate in code reviews as both a learner and contributor
  • Communicate clearly about progress, questions, and challenges

Post‑launch responsibilities

  • Help support products after launch by investigating issues and contributing fixes
  • Improve testing, diagnostics, and automation to make products more reliable over time
  • Learn best practices for maintaining and evolving software in real world products

Responsibilities
  • Learns to review and understand work items to build knowledge of Surface product features, working closely with engineers and partners.
  • Assists with breaking work into tasks, providing estimates, and raising risks or blockers early with guidance from the team.
  • Helps to investigate, debug, and resolve customer facing issues across supported Surface products.
  • Collaborates across software and hardware disciplines (software, systems, electrical, architecture) to deliver value added features that improve the usability and reliability of Surface devices.
  • Contributes to a diverse and evolving codebase supporting many in market products, with opportunities to work on different devices and scenarios.
  • Utilizes current AI tools to develop to reduce manual effort, improve quality, create and improve automation, and eliminate error prone processes.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Rust, Java, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred qualification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 1+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Rust, Java, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field with proven experience coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Rust, Java, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience debugging and resolving software issues in multiprocessor systems using source‑level debuggers, hardware‑level debugging tools, and diagnostic utilities.
  • Experience writing, modifying, and debugging production code in C, C++, Python, or similar system‑level programming or scripting languages.
  • Experience developing PC‑based drivers, low‑level interface applications, or automation scripts.
  • Experience with embedded systems or driver development, including exposure to PC architectures, UEFI, operating system drivers, 32‑bit and 64‑bit microprocessors, and common I/O or interconnect buses such as I2C or SPI.
  • Experience using AI‑assisted development tools for tasks such as code generation, repository analysis, or debugging support.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly through written documentation or verbal discussion with engineering stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively on technical issues that evolve over short timeframes.

Software Engineering IC2 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $84,200 - $165,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $109,000 - $180,400 per year.
